Five Places To Eat From A Rochester Foodie

For some us, the idea of returning to Rochester in about two weeks make us cringe. While for the most of us, the idea of digesting pounds and pounds of food from our beloved on-campus kitchens - primarily Douglas, Danforth, and Pit - makes a us a little queasy. However, despite the nausea that Panda bowls and Dfo pizza gives us, we still manage to make it through the school year by treating ourselves to a few local favourites.

FIVE PLACES TO EAT IN ROCHESTER

1. Deli Sandro's

If you love sandwiches, well this is the place! Deli Sandro's offers a variety of different sandwich options, from breakfast to lunch to dinner. They also offer a wide selection of daily soups, salads, desserts and hand-spun milkshakes (yum!). So if you're up for a short walk over the bridge, dine-in at Deli Sandro's just a few minutes east of the footbridge, slightly passed Riverview. If not, Deli Sandro's is open and ready for delivery seven times a week.

Price Range - $10-15

Recommendations:

  • Caprese Sandwich
  • Plymouth Cheesesteak
  • Buffalo Chicken Sandwich
  • Bacon Mac 'n' Cheese
  • Garbage Plate Dogwich

If none of these options amuse you, there's always the option to create your own!

2. The Distillery

Rumor has it, its been a Rochester tradition for college students to have their first dates here. The Distillery, located a few blocks west on Mt Hope Avenue, is one of the most popular places in Rochester. Regardless of what you are in the mood for, chances are, The Distillery has it! The American restaurant offers a wide array of appetizers, burgers, pastas, pizzas and a bunch more! It is also known for its famous Ghost pepper wings (try with caution, of course).

Pro tip: Stop by The Distillery after 9pm, Monday to Thursday, for half-off aps!

Price Range: $10-30

Recommendations:

  • Buffalo-style Chicken Tenders (its an appetizer, but comes with fries!)
  • Margarita Pizza
  • Chicken Mac 'n' Cheese
  • Chocolate Molten Cake with Ice Cream (my fav!)

3. Dinosaur Barbecue

A Syracuse-born chain, this Rochester restaurant is definitely a favorite. If you can't tell from its name, Dino BBQ serves barbecue-styled meats that is perfect for everyone (they have veggie burgers for non-meat eaters). Aside from its BBQ treats, Dino BBQ is also home to some great sides, appetizers and pie!

Price Range: $10-25

Recommendations:

  • Pulled Pork Sandwich
  • Ribs - Half or Full Back!
  • Mac 'n' Cheese (love <3)
  • Fried Green Tomatoes
  • Dino Burger

4. Cheesecake Factory

You guessed it, the Cheesecake Factory is home to dozens of tasty sweets and unique cheesecakes! But aside from dessert, the Cheesecake Factory also has a large selection of what to eat. From pasta to pizza to salad to steak, you can always something to fill your appetite here.

Pro tip: It may seem pricey, but the portions are large. You will definitely get your money's worth!

Price Range: $15-$35

Recommendations:

  • Fettuccine Alfredo
  • Stuffed Mushrooms
  • Grilled Rib-Eye Steak
  • Fish Tacos

5. Jay's Diner

Who does not love an old-fashioned diner? Just short of the roller blades, Jay's Diner comes close to it. Like any diner, as long as you can make it with what's on the menus, you can have it! About a ten minute car ride from campus, Jay's Diner is a great place to go and bond with friends with some great milkshakes and great food. Did I mention that is open 24 hours?

Price Range: $5-20

Recommendations:

  • Pancakes - any (heard breakfast here is great)
  • French Toast with Powered Sugar
  • Milkshakes - any
  • Mozzarella Sticks

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
