Being home is supposed to be a complete vacation from school.
You're relaxing, eating food that hasn't been mass produced in a dining hall, and you can finally shower without flip-flops. You're living the life. But what happens when suddenly, you actually start to...miss being at school.
Or more specifically, you start missing some of the people back at school. Below, five people you might miss while you're on break.
1. Your roommate.
You go home, rush to your room, and immediately spread out on your bed. You relish the idea that for the next three weeks, you have a room all to yourself, your own space. Except soon enough, something changes. You get... lonely? This didn’t used to happen, it’s confusing. But now, you realize that it’s different. Now, you have nobody with whom to share ice cream at midnight, nobody that remembers your schedule well enough to ask you how that test went, and nobody who so completely understands the struggle of your somehow always too loud hallway. You just can’t look at your bedroom the same anymore.
2. Your (school) best friend.
A best friend right there with you at school is incomparable to any other best friend you’ve ever had. Sure, you may get on each other’s nerves more than you have before with friends at home, but that’s only because of how much time you spend with each other. You and this person have seen each other at your worsts (and your bests, of course-but that’s not the point here) and this has only brought you closer. Even when you fight, you know you two can always get through it, because there’s just no one else with whom you can spend all day and night and still not get sick of.
3. Dining hall guy.
This one probably isn’t the first guy you’d think of as you tearfully wave goodbye to all your friends at school. But just hear me out. Maybe it isn’t the guy at the register in the dining hall-maybe it’s someone who works in your building or the woman who serves you your morning Starbucks. This person always seems to have a smile on his face and you’ve come to appreciate your brief but friendly daily conversations. It’s always nice to have a routine and when that includes an extra smile, it’s even better.
4. School bae.
Let’s get this straight: school bae is not someone with whom you’re actually in a relationship. School bae can be filed under a number of different categories: 1. The guy or girl with whom you have an ongoing “flirtashionship” (i.e. your relationship is grounded purely in flirting yet it somehow just goes on and on) 2. This person actually has no clue you exist, but that hasn’t stopped you from you know, admiring from afar and imagining your wedding 3. You might actually even be friends with this person, but well, I think it goes without saying that friends is pretty much where you’re stuck for now.
5. That one teacher.
To expand upon this one, maybe it’s more than a particular teacher, and you actually miss a whole class. Maybe this teacher and/or class got you interested in a class or subject you never thought you would enjoy, or maybe you just particularly like this teacher’s personality and have even begun feeling close to them. Either way, you probably did not expect to miss something so school related when you’re supposed to just be relaxing at home and getting busy with your Netflix and a big bag of chips.
Now, I'm not saying that you're sitting home and counting down the minutes until you can go back to school and see any of these people again. But what I am saying is that if you catch yourself thinking about any of these guys, just don't be surprised. You'll be back soon. Until then, just try to enjoy the luxuries of home and don't miss those shower flip-flops too much.
