Books are a great way to escape the realities of life for a little while and engage in stories and knowledge. Fiction books are fun to read (John Green is always a guilty pleasure), but sometimes I like to pick up a nonfiction book and learn about the people and world around me. Not only are they good reads for yourself, but you can also throw a little bit of knowledge at the dinner table from your reading!
1. The "Freakonomics" Series by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner.
The brilliant "Freakonomics" series has caused me to see the world through different eyes. The first two books out of the four-book series discuss various economic studies that the authors conducted, the third book teaches you how to see the world through economic glasses, and the fourth book consists of mini rants from the authors' blog. The books are so interesting because they illustrate how economics can apply to practically every area of your life; it's not just graphing supply and demand. If you're looking for a book series that will keep you on your feet, this is for you!
2. "The Genius of Dogs" by Brian Hare and Vanessa Woods.
Dogs have always held a soft spot in my heart. Not only are their petite paws and wet noses cute to look at, but they also hold a lot of knowledge. This book traces back the history of dogs from their ancestors, discusses their individual actions and what they mean, and focuses on their loyalty to the human race. Grab your furry friend to cuddle up to while reading this book!
3. "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg.
I was strolling through Target one day and came across this fantastic book. After reading what it was about, I had to purchase it. "Habit" is an interesting concept because it consists of how we go about our days. We create habits when we get ready in the morning, at work, in school, with friends, when celebrating holidays, and just about every other thing you can think of. "The Power of Habit" breaks down the cycle of routine and shows how it affects our personal lives and the business cycle.
4. "Make-Up: Your Life Guide to Beauty, Style, and Success—Online and Off" by Michelle Phan.
YouTube is no longer just a search engine for videos, but now also a career path. Michelle Phan started out as a blogger and YouTuber, and now is a successful entrepreneur and CEO. She shares her secrets to her successful story--whether you need tips on how to create a killer resume, dress for your dream job, follow your goals, or create a clean social media platform, Michelle has got you covered!
5. "The Truth About Everything" by Brianna Wiest.
Everyone can relate to the happy feeling they get when a song offers great emotions or advise for what they are going through, and that is essentially what this book does. Each chapter offers a mini story about an obstacle that life can throw at you, and then ties in a positive message. This book is so empowering because there is no force more powerful than relation. Whether you're succeeding or struggling, knowing that you aren't alone is an empowering feeling, and that's that every chapter of this book offers.
