I am a big movie buff and enjoy a lot of movies from different genres. It was hard for me to narrow my favorites down to five but if I had to these movies would definitely be my recommendations.
1. "Ed Wood" (1994).
This movie is directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp. The planning of this movie was very noticeably well planned out and down to the detail. This movie is about the worst director in the world Ed Wood, the maker of Plan 9 of Outer Space which was titled as one of the worst movies ever. Tim Burton's movie is about the thought process of Ed Wood and how he made his movies. Ed wood was made in the 90's but the movie is in black and white, in order to symbolize the director Ed Woods movies. The actors and actresses Tim Burton chose look a lot like the original actors in the Plan 9 of Outer Space movie. This witty movie of an eccentric director who feels more comfortable in women's clothes was a brilliant idea for a movie and who is better to make a movie like that than Tim Burton.
2. "Hick" (2011).
This movie is directed by Derick Martini and starring Chloe Grace Mortez, Eddie Redmayne and Blake Lively. This movie is about a runaway teen who meets an addict drifter and an unstable cowboy. Chloe Grace Mortez runs away from her unstable family and ends up in a worse situation than she already was. Although she meets a troubled friend, she also runs into an insane cowboy who turns out to be a stalker and an unstable person in general. This movie is bittersweet but also drama filled and somewhat of a thriller. The actors and actresses do an amazing job in a movie that definitely should get more recognition.
3. "Candy" (2006).
This indie film was directed by Neil Armfield starring Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish. Candy is about two lovers who are stuck in a herion addiction and are falling deeper and deeper into the addiction with failed efforts to get clean. This film was well made and thought out with amazing acting. Candy gives a very real representation of what falling under an addiction really looks like and the terrible effects of it. Although this movie is a good way to know the consequences of drug addictions, I don't recommend it to somebody who is struggling with addiction because studies say that watching a movie like this could cause a relapse. This isn't a sugar coated movie and is sad but also an amazing film that I think represents addiction in a very real way.
4. "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" (1993).
What's Eating Gilbert Grape is an indie film directed by Lasse Hallstorm and starring Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio. Gilbert Grape is a young man who takes on a lot of responsibility. His mother is very overweight to the point where she can't leave the house and his younger brother is mentally impaired. As Gilbert takes care of his family, he meets a free-spirited girl Becky (Juliette Lewis) who wins his heart and becomes apart of his life. You see amazing acting from both Johnny Depp and young Leonardo DiCaprio. This movie is bittersweet and pulls on your heart strings as you watch the connection between a family whose lives aren't easy.
5. "Girl, Interrupted" (1999).
This movie is a true story of Susanna Kaysen who is played by Winona Ryder. James Mangold directed this movie about a woman who finds herself in a mental institution where she meets a dangerous and seductive woman named Lisa who is played by Angelina Jolie. Girl, Interrupted is also bittersweet but also very real at times. The acting is amazing and shows extremely good talent when it comes to both Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie's acting. This movie also has Whoopi Goldberg, Jared Leto and Brittany Murphy starring it as well. In this movie you see good representations of a mental institution in the 60's. Susanna Kaysen's struggle to gain back her reality is an inspiring fight and the twisted changes of personality in Lisa's actions are almost bone chilling. Along with the realness there is sweetness in the connection between the women who are all in the mental institution together. Girl, Interrupted is an ultimate favorite and will leave you in awe.
