5 Memorable Trends and Events from 2016

As I am sure we all know, this past year was one for the books.
We have seen the course of history change and as we near the New Year, I thought what a perfect time to go through 5 of the most memorable things I remember from 2016!
Enjoy!

1. The Election

Now I won't go into too much detail here, but with all disregard to political party preferences, I think we can all agree that this election was one for the history books. A female was nominated by a major party as a candidate and a businessman was elected president even though the popular vote said otherwise. Many people felt threatened by the thought of a seemingly unqualified president in The Oval Office, many people were in full support of the winning candidate. But, I have an inkling that whoever would have been elected will have to decide some important things about the future of our country.

2. Harambe

Harambe might be one of the biggest occurrences of this past year. Simply said, if you managed to be exposed to the many memes and trends that came along with his death, you have lived a lovely and peaceful 2016. Here is a summary. On May 28, 2016, a small child fell into the Gorilla area at the Cincinnati Zoo. The gorilla in the area, Harambe, began to play with the small child, pulling him around the enclosure. Harambe was killed in order for the zoo to rescue the child because a tranquilizer would have taken too long to hit his bloodstream. Needless to say, the internet went insane in support of the gorilla. Your opinion on whether he should have been killed is yours, and mine is mine. But the key to this incident is to do your research before you claim one opinion or another. But the aftermath of his death now includes commonly heard phrases like "Boobs out for Harambe."

3. Mannequin Challenge

This challenge swept across the country around the end of this year. Started in Jacksonville, Fl with this original video of the challenge, it went viral and almost everyone and their mothers were doing the challenge. Simply enough, everyone in the video freezes and in most, the song "Black Beatles" by Rae Sremmurd plays in the background. No one really knows why it came to be but I have a feeling this won't just be a trend of 2016.

4. Severus Snape Died {insert crying emoji}

Alan Rickman, the famous British actor who played the ultimate villain - Severus Snape, who performed in the 8 Harry Potter movies, passed away this year at the age of 69. He had a short battle with cancer, but he will always live on in the hearts of many as the amazingly complex character we knew as Snape.

5. The Zika Virus

This virus went viral (?) in the news this year. The CDC reports that this virus is passed to humans by a specific mosquito carrying the virus and that this mosquito can be found in the US. But, it really hit the US news as reports came in that the virus could pass between a mother and her unborn child. The other fact that caused the outbreak to hit the news was that there is no known cure or vaccination for this virus. Though it can be contracted in the US, the main locations of concern include, North and South America, The Pacific Islands and Cape Verde. Work is still being done to discover a cure.

Well, there you have it! Five things to remember from 2016! I hope you have an amazing Holiday Break and a Happy New Year!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
