The 53rd New York Film Festival, presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, will run through October 11th. If you happen to venture over to the Upper West Side, here is a rundown on some of the flicks you might want to check out.
"Where to Invade Next"
Showing: Friday, October 2nd and Saturday, October 3rd
Making its U.S. premiere, the documentary is the first for director Michael Moore in six years. The super secretive project is not, as it sounds, a look at where America should embed its boot-print next, but instead a take on other countries' policies that may be beneficial for the United States to consider. The countries Moore visits include Italy, Finland, and Norway.
"Steve Jobs"
Showing: Saturday, October 3rd
The brainchild of writer Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, Charlie Wilson’s War) and director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours), this is not another biopic of the mastermind behind some of the world's most-loved technology. Michael Fassbender steps into Jobs's black turtleneck and round glasses, portraying the man during some of the biggest moments of his career, including the launch of the first Macintosh, the NeXT work station, and the iMac.
"Microbe & Gasoline"
Showing: Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday, October 4th
Michel Gondry's (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind) latest comedy focuses on the titular pair of misfit, teenage boys and their friendship. When the two find themselves unhappy and misunderstood, they begin to build an elaborate house on wheels, and venture out to an old campground—stopping to visit Microbe's crush during their journey. It stars French actors Ange Dargent and Théophile Baquet, with Audrey Tatou as Microbe’s mom
"Maggie's Plan"
Showing: Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday, October 4th
Rebecca Miller's newest project puts Greta Gerwig and Ethan Hawke opposite each other in a Woody Allen-esque, New York love affair. Gerwig plays the title character, who is planing on having a baby via sperm donor when John (Hawke), an unhappily married adjunct professor at Columbia, enters the scene. With Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, and Julianne Moore in the supporting roles, Maggie's Plan is much more than a simple rom-com.
"Brooklyn"
Showing: Wednesday, October 7th and Thursday, October 8th
An adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s novel from director John Crowley (Boy A) and writer Nick Hornby, the film depicts a mid-century romance. Irish immigrant Ellis (Saoirse Ronan) moves to Brooklyn in search of a better life, only to stumble upon a handsome, sweet Italian boy (Emory Cohen) whom she quickly falls for. However, when she is offered a good job and another dashing young man, Ellis must make a choice.
