The movie industry in Korea is something not to be overlooked. There are so many amazing films that people refuse to watch because they're in a different language. But a company trying to help overcome this language barrier is DramaFever which is one of the best places to watch your favorite Korean dramas and films. All of the shows and movies provided are subtitled in English: even the Chinese, Japanese, and Taiwanese movies and dramas. DramaFever is always updated with the newest episodes and movies right as they air in their respective countries! That means you are always up to date on your favorite dramas and you won't have to suffer from the horrific spoilers found on social media right after they've aired. Here are my top five favorite Korean movies found easily on DramaFever, in no particular order:
1. A Werewolf Boy
This 2012 film staring the ever so handsome Song Joong-Ki from the popular drama Decedents of the Sun and the beautiful Park Bo-Young from Oh My Ghosts is about Soon Yi (Park Bo-Young), a young woman who has a lung issue, who moves to the countryside in hopes that the fresh air will help her heal. As they're moving in, Soon Yi discovers Chul Soo (Song Joong-Ki) who they believed was an orphan in lack of simple mental skills. As the pair grows closer together, Soon Yi learns more than an enough about Chul Soo and who he really is. This is one of my favorite Korean movies of all time, one that I could watch 10000 times and never get tired of it. It is also one of the few movies that can bring tears to my eyes.
2. Twenty
Twenty is a very raunchy film--PG-13-- staring Lee Jun-Ho, Kang Ha-Neul, and Kim Woo-Bin who was recently diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer (Read more about his condition here). These three high school buddies learn how to get through life as 20 year olds in the real world while juggling girls, work obligations, and money expenses that they get from their parents. They soon find out that life as an adult is not as easy as they might think. This film is absolutely hilarious in every way, from Woo-Bins temper tantrum to the three boys relying on each other.
3. Spellbound
Spellbound is a movie about magician Jo Goo (Lee Min-Ki) who makes a "horror magic show" staring Yeo Ri (Son Ye-Jin). Little does Jo Goo know, Yeo Ri can see ghosts! This bump in the road creates a terrific storyline for the two leads filled with horror. This also makes it very hard for Yeo Ri to date anyone with a ghost always looking over her shoulder.
4. My Annoying Brother
My Annoying Brother is a fairly new movie starring Do Kyung-Soo aka D.O from the K-pop Group "EXO," Jo Jung-Suk from Jealousy Incarnate, and Park Shin-Hye from Heirs. Doo Sik (Jo Jung-Suk) is a fraudster who is serving time in jail while his brother, Doo Young (D.O) is a former Judo fighter, only to stop due to an accident that took his sight away from him. When Doo Sik cons his way out of prison, he creates an even bigger headache for his brother who is trying to live on his own despite the worries of his former coach, Lee Soo-Hyun (Park Shin-Hye). This film, much like the other movies D.O has starred in, made me cry a lot. Pack some tissues and ice cream with you while you enjoy this movie! And maybe some popcorn to throw at the screen when things get tense.
5. Socialphobia
This 2014-2015 film is a huge eyeopener to the issues surrounding cyberbullying and younger generations. Starring in Socialphobia is Byun Yo-Han and Lee Joo-Seung. The film follows a group of around nine boys who decide to go after an online commenter named Re Na who has made rude comments about the military and even made fun of a dead soldier. These boys retaliated with their own mean comments towards the commenter creating a huge hate campaign against the girl. One thing leads to another and the original commenter commits suicide. What will the boys do? Deem it as a murder of course!
I hope you are able to watch one if not all the movies this list! Maybe they will become your favorites as well! Did any of your favorites not make this list? Comment below!
