Even though many said goodbye to the six-season show of Downton Abbey last spring, I find myself watching it over and over and over again. Some may say I have an obsession… And, well, they would be right. I’m not sure if it’s the British accents, or the drama, or perhaps the charming personalities of Matthew, Tom, and Henry, but there’s something about the show that simply brings me back for a seventh, a twelfth… even a twentieth viewing of each season.
As this holiday season is upon us, many people find it the perfect time to spend with family or catch up with friends. The case for me, however, is that it’s the perfect opportunity to re-watch all fifty-four episodes of Downton Abbey. My family knows that it’s best to simply leave me alone and to ignore my seemingly random murmurs as I watch the show (really, I’m just quoting the entire episode). It simply is my favorite show, and for good reason.
If you’ve never seen the show – or even heard of it – here are some phases, you’ll go through while watching it:
1. Utter Confusion
From the very beginning, there are numerous storylines and it is completely confusing to follow who’s who and what’s going on – bear with it. It is completely worth it. By the end of the six seasons, you will be able to name every servant and every nobleman who every entered Downton Abbey.
2. Pure Hate
As certain characters (i.e. Thomas and Mrs. O’Brien – let’s not forget Edna) begin plotting and planning, you learn to despise their every move – their every action.
3. You Will Cry
Nearly every character in this show pulls at your heartstrings some point throughout the six seasons – it is inevitable. Whether it’s through death or new life or even a marriage, you’ll be needing a box of tissues.
4. It's Hard Not To Laugh
Whether it’s The Dowager Countess (played by Dame Maggie Smith) or the Butler Carson, wit and humor is plenty through the show and you’re bound to laugh.
5. Romance
From episode one, romance has a key role within the show. Whether it’s Mary and Matthew or Anna and Bates or Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes – you’re always shipping a couple. Through all their heartaches and troubles, you still hope and pray their love remains strong.
These are some of the many different emotions and phases that you will go while watching Downton Abbey. Even though I have seen every episode countless times, I still find myself returning to it, ready to watch the Crawleys in all their British glory over and over and over again.
