5 '80s Movies' You Have To See In 2017

There's no better decade in cinematic history than the year of John Hughes.

I can't speak for everyone when I say this, however, I am assuming that there a good handful of people who will unapologetically agree: eighties movies are absolute masterpieces.

I don't mean masterpieces in an "amazing cinematic quality, high tech, Titanic" kind of way, but in a "this is cheesy, oh my god I love it so much" kind of a way.

When my mom first introduced me to the movies she grew up watching, my first reaction was that they were going to be terrible, not gonna lie. On the contrary, though, I fell in love. There's something about movies from that decade that make my heart happy and my life content.

If you are someone who hasn't watched any eighties movies ever (you poor soul), here are five that I can't resist watching on a Friday night spent inside with a bowl of popcorn and a good friend by my side.

1. "The Breakfast Club" directed by John Hughes

I know what you're thinking... "Of course "The Breakfast Club" is on this list (insert eye roll)." And you know what, you are absolutely right. Why wouldn't it be? "The Breakfast Club" has gained a bit of a bad reputation on social media, being deemed overrated and that makes me sad. This was the first eighties movie I ever watched, so it holds a special place in my heart. Hughes manifested five walking high school stereotypes (you later learn not everything is as it seems), put them all in Saturday detention, and created something magnificent. 10/10 highly recommend.

Also, John Hughes is the reigning king of eighties movies, don't @ me.

2. "The NeverEnding Story" directed by Wolfgang Petersen

I never in a million years thought that a movie about a kid being propelled into a storybook written about him who has to save a magical kingdom from something called "The Nothing" would grab my attention. Lo and behold, it did. While the special effects in the movie don't necessarily live up to today's standards, it's a cinematic experience you don't want to miss out on. Little disclaimer, if you have any heart when it comes to animals, there will be tears shed.

3. "Heathers" directed by Michael Lehmann

Beware of the bad boy because things can weird and out of control very, very quickly. Beware of the popular girls because, well, they suck. And beware of the protagonist because she's full of surprises too. Luckily, though, she defies the bad boy's charm and good looks and comes around in the end.

4. "Labyrinth" directed by Jim Henson

David Bowie. A catchy ass soundtrack. An abundance of goblins. What more do you need? If you skip out on this one, you'll be doing yourself a huge disservice. Just go, watch it now, and don't come back until you're done.

5. "The Outsiders" directed by Francis Ford Coppola

Even if you haven't watched the movie, I'm sure you'll recognize the famous title from your eighth grade English class. Just about everyone I know has read the book and watched the movie right after. I know I did and it tore me up. If you know, you know. If you don't, then I suggest heading to the couch nearest you and turning it on. While watching, ask yourself: are you #TeamGreaser or #TeamSocial?

(I am #TeamGreaser and Rob Lowe as Sodapop is a gift to all).

Here's a few bonus movies to check out. This list isn't exhaustive, so please be sure to go out and find some more to watch. You're welcome (:

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
