The new year is upon us. With that comes the dreaded new year resolutions. "This year I'm going to work out and eat healthy." Yea that's what everyone says on January 1st, but come January 14th I find myself standing in line at McDonald's. What I've come to realize is that resolutions don't have to be this grandiose life-style change. It's the little things that make the biggest change. So, I've comprised a list of "resolutions" that make starting the new year exciting and full of adventure.
1. Try a new food
I'm speaking from personal experience on this one. I'm one of the pickiest eaters I know, and over the past year I've gone outside my comfort zone and tried new foods like humus (I know humus really I'm 18 years old and am just now trying humus), tuna, and kangaroo (it's not as bad as it sounds). I know all these foods are not "new", but for me trying new foods and actually enjoying them gets me excited. Not only does it give me more options for when I go out to eat, but it opens my pallet to a new realm of flavor. Get out there and try a new food, you'll be surprised as to what you'll find!
2. Listen to a new band or genre of music
I'm also speaking from a personal experience on this one. New music never fails to but me in the best mood. Jamming out to music clears my head and calms me down. I associate music with memories that I create throughout life. The start of a new year is a perfect time to try out some new tunes. Nothing better than listening to new music and making new memories.
3. Go explore!
Treat yourself this year! Allow yourself to free your mind and get outside to explore. It doesn't have to be anything fancy! Even if it's a weekend in the mountains, or hiking on a random day, getting outside and clearing your mind will keep you sane with whatever this year brings.
4. Read a book
Reading is a great way to escape reality. Reading makes you think. It often challenges you to think with a different mindset or point of view. Thinking with a different mindset can help prepare you for whatever 2017 has to throw your way.
5. Pick up a new hobby
Cooking, baking, knitting, photography, working out, etc. are great ways to find something you love. You never know what you're going to like without trying something different. Having a hobby allows you to put energy into something positive and enjoyable.
Ring in the new year different this time. Why not try something new, see something new, or think with a different mindset? It's a new year, you got nothing to lose.
