I remember waking up on Saturday mornings and running downstairs to plop in front of the television for a healthy dose of cartoons. As I’ve grown older, cartoons have still captivated my attention. I love the idea of animation and voice acting. Adult cartoons are great, and so are kid cartoons! Here’s a list of five cartoons you must watch, regardless of their intended audiences. They are great!
1. Steven Universe
This cartoon is a Cartoon Network series that has developed a very dedicated fan base due to amazing story telling. While the show is intended for children, it hits on issues of gender and race which makes for tender moments. The colorful animation and catchy tunes that make up the cartoon draw you in and help you love the characters. I highly recommend that you follow Steven Universe as he learns to be himself with the help of his good friends, The Crystal Gems. This show will leave you grinning!
2. Bob’s Burgers
Bob’s Burgers is a FOX cartoon that has garnered a lot of attention in the past year. This cartoon is adult in content and incredibly smart. Word play is a big part of this show so if you like puns, you should definitely watch. Bob runs a burger joint with the help of his dysfunctional, yet loving family. Every character is unique and developed, cracking you up with every well-delivered line. This show has a charm that is hard to define, but it’s #relatable. A bonus is, it’s available to watch on Netflix! Get your binge on!
3. Avatar: The Last Airbender
I grew up watching this cartoon. It’s as good today as it was then. A Nickelodeon show, Avatar: The Last Airbender is heartwarming and fun. The world that it creates is one that I wish was real just as much as I wish Hogwarts was real. Fantastic storytelling combines with beautiful animation to create something special. If you’ve never watched this show or haven’t seen it in a while, I highly recommend that you give it a try. Enter of world of magical powers, mythical creatures, and childish delight when you watch Avatar: The Last Airbender. Help Aang, the last Avatar, save the world with his best friends. Then decide, what kind of bender are you? (P.S. If you like it, there's a sequel series called Avatar: The Legend of Korra.)
4. Bojack Horseman
Bojack Horseman is a Netflix Original Series that is just now coming into the limelight despite having three seasons released. More people need to see this cartoon because it is hysterical. And ready to be binged! Bojack Horseman tackles the struggles faced by a washed up sitcom star as he tries to live his life. Definitely an adult cartoon, Bojack Horseman offers sage advice in a comical manner. Characters challenge stereotypes and leave you’ll never know what’s going to happen next. Check it out!
5. Archer
The final cartoon on this list is another cartoon with adult content. The unique art style was enough to intrigue me, but if that’s not enough for you I’ve got to say that the characters are great, the plot line is hysterical, and you will learn of so many good memes if you watch it. The show follows Sterling Archer, a secret agent, thwarts many a bad guys plot but creates chaos all around him. His coworkers either create more trouble for him or are trying to clean up his messes. It is highly entertaining and the fact that it’s on Netflix should make this cartoon all the more appealing. Watch away!
We don’t need to stop watching cartoons as we grow older. And we don’t have to watch exclusively adult cartoons! There are lots of good cartoons out there! Browse around, but I recommend starting with one of these five cartoons! Happy watching!
