Game of Thrones and Doctor Who come as no surprise, but there are at least five other British shows out there that deserve a watch.
1. SPY (2 Seasons / Canceled)
A Hulu original, I stumbled upon Spy accidentally while waiting for the newest episode of The Office to load (#tbt.) The plot is silly, the jokes quick and witty, but it's the character development that really makes this show shine. Be it the quirky boss known only as "The Examiner" or the unbelievably intelligent and sarcastic ten year old Marcus, every actor and actress has clearly given 110%. Give it a go!
2. Come Fly with Me (1 Season / Canceled)
The fact that this show was canceled after one season is absolutely unbelievable. Truly one of the funniest shows I have ever had the pleasure of watching, I discovered it on an aircraft full of sleeping passengers and was actually told by an air hostess that I'd have to settle down because my laughter was waking up my fellow plane-mates. The entire show features a million different characters, but they're all played by the same two guys: the legends themselves, Matt Lucas and David Walliams. Plus, their pilot (ha!) episode is as funny as the ones that follow, which very few TV shows can say.
3. Sherlock (3 Seasons / Ongoing)
Apparently I'm really late to the party with this one, but I pushed aside Sherlock for the longest time because I confused it with Doctor Who (a show I passionately detest.) Thankfully, Sherlock is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, somehow making every 1 hour 30 minute episode extraordinarily entertaining and captivating. It does require a bit of thinking and your full-fledged attention, so save this show for when you have time to devote yourself entirely to your TV set or laptop screen.
4. The I.T. Crowd (4 Seasons / Canceled)
I've only seen a few episodes of this show, and although it didn't pull me in as quickly or deeply as the others, it's still a great example of how satirical British television can be. Similar to America's "Silicon Valley", The I.T. Crowd is full of computer geek references and hilarious running gags a la "Arrested Development".
5. The X-Factor (10 Seasons / Ongoing)
If you thought the American version was funny...
Home to the world's most famous rapper, this dude, the X-Factor showcases three exceptionally amusing things: talent, lack of talent, and Simon Cowell. Since it may be hard for you to watch the show live, just head on over to YouTube every week to find the funniest performances.
All in all, British folk have a unique sense of humor that translates well into their TV shows. Don't be afraid to explore what they have to offer!
