Summer is here and we all have one thing on our mind: ice cream. Our favorite ice cream shops are reopening for the season and we couldn't be more excited to spend exorbitant amounts of money on some refreshing treats. Western Mass is a great place for foodies, and ice cream is no exception. Here are my top 5 must stops for this summer.
Elsie's Creamery at Randall's Farm
Located: 631 Center St. Ludlow, MA
The Details: Elsie's is a quintessential ice cream joint: family-owned, unique flavors, and great service (sometimes from yours truly). This is an easy stop if your returning from a beach trip because its right off exit 7 of the mass pike. Be sure to try their various flavors of hard ice cream, specialty razzles and sundaes.
What to Try: My favorites include Salty Caramel, S'mores, Chocolate Banana, and Mississippi River Mud, just to name a few.
Flayvors at Cook Farm
Located: 129 S. Maple St. Hadley, MA
The Details: Flayvors is one-of-a-kind because when ordering ice cream you can see where it comes from right on their property. It is part of Cook farm which raises dairy cattle, and the milk is used for the treats they serve. They offer a superset cafe area that serves lunch and the serve a variety of ice cream flavors in sizes up to 4 scoops!
What to Try: "Hadley Grass" is an asparagus flavored ice cream for those daring enough to try.
Herrell's Ice Cream
Located: 8 Old South St. Northampton, MA
The Details: Herrell's is great because it's located in downtown Northampton so you can stop in after dinner or a show. They have a great selection of flavors as well as mix-ins if you don't find anything for your taste. They have over 300 flavors that rotate through the store, so you never know what you'll find.
What to Try: You can't leave Herrell's without trying their very own hot fudge and home-made whip cream.
Mt. Tom's Homemade Ice Cream
Located: 34 Cottage St. Easthampton, MA
The Details: Mt.Tom's is right next to Nashawannuck pond and is a great family destination. Kid's will love this place because its not only an ice cream shop but a candy store too. Combined between their great ice cream flavors and candy selection there's something for everyone there.
What to Try: Cashew Turtle and Irish Cream
SoCo Creamery
Located: 5 Railroad St. Great Barrington, MA
