As Christmas Day is quickly approaching, everyone is marking their calendars so they can watch their favorite holiday flicks. True, Christmas is awesome no matter what: there's family time, holiday dinners and parties, presents, snow, warm drinks, sweaters, great songs - but what would Christmas be like without the movies? Here are the top 5, classic Christmas movies to make sure you add to your watch-list this Christmas - don't forget to check it twice.
Oh, and listen here to get in the Christmas mood before starting!
1. Elf
Yes, this is a more recent Christmas movie, but that doesn't mean it's not as good as the classics. Not only does this movie provide dozens of quotes ('Smiling's my favorite', anyone?), but it's heartwarming and hilarious to boot. Plus, Will Ferrell stars as Buddy the Elf, so how bad could it?
2. A Charlie Brown Chistmas
This classic from 1965 celebrates its 50th birthday this year, meaning that for fifty years, Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang have been a Christmas staple. This short flick advocates less commercialism around the holidays, as well as being more open-hearted (even an ugly tree needs a home, right?).
3. A Christmas Story
When A Christmas Story was released in 1983, it was viewed as a 'sleeper'. Boy, were they wrong! This movie, like Elf, lends itself to dozens of classic quotes like 'You'll shoot your eye out' and 'Fra-gee-ley, must be Italian'. Part of this movie's humor is seeing your own family reflected in Ralphie's, and remembering what it was like to be a kid at Christmastime.
4. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
The Griswolds are back at it again, this time for the holidays. If you've never seen the Griswolds' first vacation, investigate it here (don't watch the Ed Helms sequel!). This 1989 Christmas flick shows a wackier side to family coming together for the holidays (have you seen Cousin Eddie?), and a dad's desperate attempts to give his family the best Christmas ever.
5. White Christmas
This 1954 classic starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera Ellen is equal parts romantic and heartwarming. White Christmas is full of great show numbers and songs, including the title written by Irving Berlin. This is a perfect movie to watch on Christmas Eve (the movie ends on that day), and has all the classic-Christmas vibes you could ever ask for.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
