Oh my god, another playlist?
It's the end of another month at Odyssey, which means one thing- time to announce our featured writer for July! We've had several amazing writers join our summer program this year. Using our response button feature, they carry on our mission of sparking positive, productive conversations in a polarized world.
This month, we're excited to honor Sara Ashton- poet, entertainment reviewer, and writing inspiration to us all. She contributes to Odyssey all the way from England! Read on to hear her story.
If you're interested in becoming a writer, email us! You’ll get to choose your own topics and write one article a week. Your work will be featured on our homepage and in our weekly Overheard on Odyssey newsletter. Plus, for your first 10 articles, you’ll be compensated by HQ at $10/article.
I first joined The Odyssey team all the way back in 2018, feels like a lifetime ago! And I slipped away from it for a while but gladly came back to it this year and this time, as a response writer.
It has been such an amazing feeling being able to connect with other peoples stories and ideas, having this platform to share with other talent is such an immersive and wonderful experience.
Being an English & Creative Writing graduate who has a huge passion for poetry has also paid off writing for The Odyssey, as I have been privileged enough to be able to show my work to the world - and I couldn’t be more thankful for the wonderful team for letting me have the opportunity to showcase my work to the world.
When choosing an article to respond to, if I’m not writing poetry — I pick the one that speaks to me the most. I go from there, read the article a few times and get to work on my article. It is great to have structure, whilst also having some sort of flexibility in this role. Though, I always ensure my articles are sent in the same time every week.
The Odyssey has helped me improve my confidence as a writer, and I am so thankful for the opportunities I have been given so far, I look forward to the rest of this journey!
From Luke and Leia to Beyonce's twins...
“Name a more iconic duo... I'll wait." OK, well, if you insist. In no particular order, here's a list of 100 dynamic duos that are ~probably~ more iconic than you.

If you refuse to eat the majority of the foods on this list, then you're most likely a picky eater.
You're probably used to everyone giving you a hard time for being "too picky". But let's be honest, we like what we like and we stick to it! Every time I try and venture outside my comfort zone I end up regretting it and disliking my food choice. Whether it's the smell, texture, or tase...if something is off, I won't eat it. All pickers unite and stick to the safest option out there: chicken tenders and fries.
Here are 25 foods that you probably hate if you're a picky eater.
Something about the rubbery texture PLUS the fact that it's a fungus? No thank you.
I am not a fan of any vinegary foods, too sour.
I'll take a BLT please, minus the T. Squishy, watery tomatoes ruin every dish in my opinion.
Spinach tastes like a dirty leaf that someone plucked from the ground.
The smell itself is enough to turn anyone away from eating it.
The texture of coconut ruins any dessert, who wants a stringy piece of coconut stuck between their teeth?
Olives have a certain bitterness to them that I can't get past.
Despite the craze for avocados, I find them to be too bland.
Spoiled, rotten milk? Doesn't sound too appealing to me.
Again, unless these suckers are masked with tons of butter they are not tasty at all.
A stringy, watery vegetable with relatively no flavor. Why even bother?
Cream cheese is too rich and slightly sour for my liking.
How am I supposed to enjoy a dish if my mouth is burning the whole time?
Certain sushi rolls are either too bland, too fishy, or too raw for my liking.
The skin on these berries turn me away, as well as the sour taste.
My toast goes in the toaster for a short amount of time to avoid the smell and taste of it being burnt.
The little mush balls smell and look almost as bad as they taste.
So mushy and flavorless, I don't know how people can enjoy them.
Again, just way too mushy and flavorless. The appearance alone makes me want to throw it straight in the trash.
My taste buds can't handle the bitterness and acidic flavors of anything sour.
Candy is supposed to be sweet, but black licorice just has a certain flavor that makes it unappealing.
Some of my favorite songs for kids to do lyrical routines to
I've been a dance teacher and choreographer for over 4 years now and one of the biggest things I've learned is that it is very difficult to find a lyrical song for young dancers. You don't want a song that's too emotionally mature, but you also don't want a song that's too babyish and cheesy. A choreographer needs to find a happy medium. Here I've compiled a list of 10 of my favorite lyrical songs for children.
A beautiful song about self confidence! The lyrics are very uplifting and super appropriate for a little girl.
A song about escaping fear and running free! Bedingfield sings "Wild horses I want to be like you, throwing caution to the wind, I'll run free too." There's no mention of heartbreak or despair. Perfect for a little kid.
A slow song with a beautiful build up! I interpret the song to be about the safety and love of home. This song gives me chills just from listening to it. It's so beautiful.
A song about- yep, you guessed it- being brave! Idina's voice creates the picture of an innocent girl transforming to a courageous warrior on stage. Very powerful.
Although many people know this tune as a Christian Song, it can be interpreted differently to not be about God. There are many versions of this song, but Celtic Woman's is my favorite for a young dancer because her voice is high-pitched and light as a feather.
Again, this is a religious song, but it is one of my favorites. The song tells how sometimes the blessings in life are disguised as bad things. Laura Story's voice reminds me of an innocent child dancing around the stage.
Even this inspirational song from The Hannah Montana Movie makes my list. I absolutely despise country songs at dance competitions, but this is an exception. I love the message it sends and I think it is perfect for a young girl to dance to.
Yes, this song breaks the rule about little girls dancing about heartbreak, but I love this song so much. I've seen 2 little girls do a solo to this song and both times were beautiful. I think it works so well because Clarkson's voice is so light that it matches the movements and emotions of a small dancer.
This is a song about happiness set to a light and innocent voice. Great for young dancers!
Lastly, here is a song about sadness that is not about heartbreak. The sorrow expressed by McLachlan in this song can look beautiful on a little girl.
Walking down the narrow street towards the Red Light District, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But when we came across our first “peep show” I was shocked. I knew that prostitution was legal in Amsterdam, but I didn’t realize the extent to which it filled this district. With the smell of cannabis and urine in the air, I realized everything anyone had ever told me about Amsterdam was true.
As a 21st century girl, I was appalled at first. Seeing these Barbie-like women standing in the windows like mannequins in nothing but their underwear freaked me out. I felt sorry for them and their life. But then I started to think more and more about it. These women are working in a thriving industry in Amsterdam. The culture is vastly different from that of America and it was more than acceptable for them to strut their stuff in those shops.
As the day went on and we passed more and more shops boasting the prettiest women in Amsterdam, I did not feel as appalled as I originally did. Amsterdam has its own culture and this is just another part of it. There is no need to shield your eyes as you walk down the streets or feel embarrassed. This is their life. You can only hope that their industry treats them and pays them well.
The other aspect of Amsterdam culture is weed. The smell reeks in the air and around every corner there are little coffee shops or convenient stores where you can buy paraphernalia. It’s just another part of the culture.
That’s the thing no one really warns you about when you study abroad. Sure, they tell you that the culture of your new home will be different, but you often forget that when you travel, you enter into an entirely new culture. As a world, we need to be accepting of these cultures as long as they follow the laws of their home country. Some cultures may seem flawed, but that’s a personal interpretation. Live and let live is my motto and it pertains to any and everyone you come into contact with. Embrace new cultures and see just how different lives can be when you live in vastly different countries.
