I’ve been dancing around writing this article because I love my parents, but it’s about time I face what their votes for Trump mean. This article is not only for the parents of millennials, but for the public who judge the sons and daughters of Trump supporters. We are not our parents.
1. We are (and have been) ashamed of you for the past year.
If you are voting for Trump, it means you agree with implicit racism, sexism, discrimination, homophobia and xenophobia. We are pleased to say that just because you raised us does not mean those implicit attitudes are embedded in us. It’s sad to use the word “shame” to describe how we feel about you, but when a presidential candidate forces you to show your true colors, it becomes difficult to use any other word. My parents raised me to always tell the truth; the one thing my mom detests the most is liars, she would always say. So imagine my disappointment when those values I was raised on were thrown out the window so that she could support someone who has built their empire on lying and cheating.
2. We know that your vote for Trump is not the only problem.
We know that pledging your support for Trump and giving money to his campaign is not the only issue at play. Rather, the real issue is that by doing so, you are buying into a belief that women are “less than” or that Mexicans and Muslims should not be given the same opportunities you were given as immigrants to this country. We are living in a crucial moment in history right now, this will be in textbooks in years to come. You have made a conscious choice to group yourselves amongst those who will not be looked upon favorably in history, just like the people we thought were bonkers for opposing the civil rights movement and supporting segregation laws that we learned about in history class.
3. We know that Hillary Clinton is not the only other option.
This one is super important because as soon as we disassociate ourselves from our parents’ political views, everyone automatically thinks we must surely be voting for Clinton. This may be true in some cases, but not all. In fact, my father is actually a libertarian, yet, he’s voting for Trump. I don’t identify myself as a libertarian and I’m voting for Gary Johnson. How can this be, you say? Well, my father thinks that a vote for a third party is a wasted vote. I don’t vote based on party, I vote based on values and my conscience. Our generation will be the one that breaks the two party system because this election has shown more than ever, that Americans want more options and are sick of the same bullsh*t from Republicans and Democrats.
4. We still love you.
Despite your poor choice in presidential candidate, you’re our parents and we love you. We just wish your eyes would be open to the hypocrisy you have been spewing since this election began. Almost everything you don’t like about Hillary Clinton is magnified in Trump; lying, cheating, fraud, cover ups, low likability, wishy-washy stances, and criminal accusations. Especially if you’re a registered Republican and you’re a proud member of the Republican party, how can you vote for someone who’s bashed two of your previous candidates? Eight years ago, you were all gung-ho for John McCain and now suddenly he’s no longer a war hero because Trump said so. Four years ago, you cast your vote for Mitt Romney, but now he’s just seeking publicity by criticizing Trump for being a phony.
Thankfully, this will all be over soon. This election has been a true display of character though, so some of the things that have been said over the dinner table cannot be unsaid or unheard. We only hope that one day you will realize what your vote for Trump meant and why it disappointed us.
