With Kim Kardashian’s baby bump and swollen feet making it into every magazine possible, I recently felt tempted to order a copy of her most recent book, Selfish. After skimming through the picture book, my mind was blown by this piece of “trash.”
On April 7, 2015, Kim Kardashian’s book, Selfish, hit bookstore shelves nation wide. The book, containing 352 of Kim's selfies, sold out in less than one minute. I admit to being a Kim K fanatic and have followed her and her family the past decade. I have waited outside Barnes & Noble for four hours to meet her and her sisters and have purchased the books Kardashian Konfidential, and Kris Jenner… and All Things Kardashian. However, if I weren’t so tempted by the media, I would refuse to spend my hard-earned money on a photo album of Kim Kardashian.
In my opinion, Selfish, is the worst book ever published and here are four reasons why:
Selfish sets a poor example for young women.
The Kardashian monarchy has taken over the television, fashion, and makeup industry. Young women are exposed to the hit TV show, Keeping up with the Kardashian’s, sometimes as early as middle school. These easily influenced teenagers idolize the Kardashian women. Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe should embrace their roles in their fans' lives and set a good example, but Kim’s book does the complete opposite. Selfish contains many cleavage-baring images (115 to be exact, including an image of Kim in her bra and underwear). By publishing these images, Kim is telling her fans that it is okay to take pictures of yourself half-naked. Young teens may then assume it is okay to send pictures like this to their friends and to boys. This is not okay.
Selfish encourages an unrealistic lifestyle and sets women up for future disappointment.
Bergdorf and Rodeo Drive by day, yacht parties by night. Kim Kardashian’s lavish lifestyle is one the average person can only dream of. Selfish features photos of Kim doing her daily rituals: shopping, modeling, traveling, and partying. I know that if I were a tween flipping through the soon-to-be mom of two’s book, I would aspire to one day live a life similar to Kim’s. This is completely unrealistic. The next generation should not dream of clubbing all night or spending $10,000 in one shopping trip. Instead, the kids of the future should have visions to cure Cancer, save lives, and make the world a better place.
It costs $19.95 for a photo-album.
I am not one to complain about a price tag. On multiple occasions I have dropped top dollar on a new pair of Kate Spade flats and saved up paychecks to follow Taylor Swift on tour. However, spending two hours worth of pay on a self-photographed picture book is ridiculous. Kardashian took these images with her iPhone, basically put them into an Apple photo album, and is asking her fans to purchase it and increase her net value. Did you know $20 could feed a Kenyan child for twenty days? Kim has visited orphanages in poverty stricken countries. If she really cared, she would donate book profits to those in need rather than increase her excessive shopping budget.
There is no story line.
“Once upon a time, a California-native made a sex tape and became a billionaire…” No! Selfish didn't even include a prelude to Kim K’s A-list status, nor any semblance of a story line. The book simply contained short blurbs under each image in no chronological. It must be nice to have Kardashian status, take pictures, and end up on The New York Times' Bestseller List.
I’m sorry Kim, I love you, but this book does not Keep-Up-With-The-Kardashian status.
