4 Reasons Why You Should Attend Thrival This Week

If you live in Pittsburgh and haven't heard of Thrival, then you're clearly out of the loop. Thrival is a week long festival of innovation events running from Sept. 21-27 with a killer music festival to end festivities. Sponsored by UPMC and produced by Thrill Mill, Thrival is sure to be one of the biggest things to happen in Pittsburgh in a long time. For those of you who aren't into technology innovation or sustainable energy, this festival may come as a surprise to you, but there are four key reasons why you don't want to miss out on Thrival.

1. Daily Events

Each day of Thrival has a different focus, and regardless of your interests, you're sure to find an event worth attending. With events for gamers, health professionals, and everyone in between, the daily events cover a huge range of topics. You're sure to find at least one exciting event that you're into, if not one every day.

2. Pittsburgh Revitalization

Thrival's events are based in 6 different sections of Pittsburgh. Each day of events takes place in a different neighborhood. Each host building of the neighborhood and it's events has some sort of revitalization or innovation going on. Places like the Energy Innovation Center will host the events. So not only are there really cool events happening, but they are also held in different neighborhoods and in sweet buildings.

3. Speakers and Sponsors

With well over 60 speakers and sponsors, the events and workshops of Thrival are sure to teach you something. You can look forward to hearing from people at the Post Gazette, UPMC, Thrill Mill, the US Dept. of Education, and many, many more. The events with these speakers and sponsors will be fantastic networking and learning opportunities, so why not find one to attend?

4. Music

If none of the above interests you, Thrival's two day music festival on Sept. 25th and 26th will. With a wide range of music genres and artists, no one will walk away from the music festival unhappy. Whether it's your inner 12-year-old fan girl going crazy for Panic! at the Disco or your trendy, hip hop loving side bumping to Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, everyone is bound to find a band they want to hear. With two stages popping up at the "creative reuse" of old industrial space in Hazelwood, this festival is definitely going to go down as one of Pittsburgh's best.

And if the festival has the same vibe as the bangin' promo created by Maverick Visuals, Thrival will not disappoint.

Tickets are $35 for both days, which is a steal considering they give you access to over 20 live performances.

Check out the music festival promo below and be sure to visit http://www.thrivalfestival.com for more information on tickets and events.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
