Finals are over! Thank god! So now students everywhere have a month’s break to hunker down and do something productive with their lives.
Who are we kidding? We all know you’re going to spend about 80% of your time either sleeping or watching Netflix. And guess what, after this semester you deserve it anyway. I’ve compiled a list of four movies to watch when you finally run out of episodes of Trailer Park Boys or Dance Moms. These obscure movies are sure to pique your interest and keep you entertained when you’ve vowed to yourself that you are “not leaving the house because there is nothing worth it out there today anyway.”
1) Primer
We have to start off strong with some heady time travel weirdness. In this indie film a group of friends, who work together after their day jobs to become tech entrepreneurs, realize they have created a form of time travel… in their garage. Through the power of magnetics (amongst other things) they are able to create a box that can bring them back in time six hours – a trick they use to turn some profit.
This movie is perfect for anyone who is really into realistic (as real as time travel gets) sci-fi. With an interesting plot that relies heavily on the details of the time travel timelines, by the end of the movie you will be scratching your head wondering how this happened exactly. Second viewings of this movie are suggested- and you won’t be sorry about it.
2)Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Okay, so this is my all time favorite movie. Joel Barrish is heartbroken. His girlfriend, Clementine, dumped him and worse, she had him erased from her memory completely. Joel decides to have the same procedure done, but as it happens he realizes what he’s loosing. We watch Joel run through his memories trying desperately to save what he can of Clementine.
This movie is the perfect mix of drama and comedy. With a cast of Kate Winslet, Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst, and Jim Carry (in a dramatic roll of all things) this movie shines. The perfect movie for someone who needs a good laugh and maybe a good cry too.
3) Beginners
Oliver’s life is rocked when his father tells him two things: he’s dying of cancer and he has a male lover half his age. This movie is told in flashbacks – we see Oliver and his relationship with his father before he dies interspersed with Oliver, fresh off of his father’s death, attempting to pursue a romantic relationship with Anna, a French actress, who has her own set of problems.
This movie is considered a drama, but with dry humor and a dog that inexplicably talks, this movie is by no means a bore.
4) VHS
If you like horror movies this is the one from you. Formatted as stories inside of stories this movie packs a punch. A group of reckless delinquents are hired to break into a house and find a video tape. What tape? They don’t know. Told that they would know the tape when they see it the boys begin to watch every vhs in the house and each is scarier than the last. But as the lives of those videotaped seem to be falling apart, the boys find their story terrifying as well.
This movie is perfect to pop on with a big group of friends or even by yourself, but either way you’re probably going to be sleeping with the lights on that night.
So kick back, relax, and heat up some popcorn because now you have a list that is sure to get you through your Monday.
