Much like most people, I was desperate for 2016 to come to a close. The year consisted of monumental figures passing away, a horrendous campaign season, terrorist attacks, innocent shooting, and even the passing of a beloved gorilla. So, yeah. 2016 could’ve been a bit better, that’s obvious. But to give you at least a glimmer of hope, here are some things to come on Netflix in 2017 that may ease the transition into the new year.
If you’re anything like me, many hours of your 2016 were spent with your eyes glued to your laptop screen after midnight binge-watching shows on Netflix. 2016 was a big year for Netflix, as they expanded on their Netflix Original library with a couple phenomenal new shows. Most of them were renewed for a second season, and I’m very exited to see what is to come.
BoJack Horseman
Since becoming one of Netflix’s first original shows, BoJack Horseman has enjoyed a few seasons of success. Although not every season seemed to be a hit for all viewers, the show got back to what really made it humorous and enjoyable, it’s charmingly somber humor, during it’s 3rd season. With notable voice actors in Will Arnett and Aaron Paul, there is more than enough natural comedy to go around. I’m really looking forward to whatever shenanigans BoJack and his animal companions get up to in the upcoming 4th season, set to release this summer.
Luke Cage
There was a ton of suspicion at first when people heard of Marvel & Netflix’s plans to produce a Luke Cage TV show, as some comic fans feared that the Harlem superhero wouldn’t easily translate to television. Their fears were quelled, eventually, after the release of the highly anticipated 13-episode first season. It was a ton of fun to watch Cage’s origins as a regular guy living in Harlem, and it was equally exciting to follow his antics once he accepted his role. I can’t wait for Season 2’s upcoming 2017 release.
Stranger Things
Stranger Things was without a doubt my favorite show of the year. I didn’t even come across the show until a few months after it’s initial release, but once I was two episodes in, I was hooked. The build up towards the main action was incredible, and the character development really makes you feel for each and every he resident of Hawkins, Indiana. Although most of the main characters in this show are just kids, they do an exceptional job of portraying their roles and fit right in with the show’s identity. I binge-watched the entire first season in just two days, and I can already predict that I will be found spending a couple days inside when Season 2 comes out.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
I must confess, I’m only on episode 4 of the recently released Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix. But from the one episode I have seen so far, I’m extremely impressed. I read all of the book as a kid, and unlike the 2004 movie, this series actually has given me nostalgic memories. With Neil Patrick Harris playing Count Olaf exceptionally, this show should be set to enjoy a ton of future success. But as Netflix’s first 2017 original release they’ve proved that the success they enjoyed last year was not a fluke.
