Everyone watches TV, and in this day and age, streaming platforms are beginning to dominate. If you need something new to watch, check out these Netflix shows!
1. Peaky Blinders
As a fan of many UK television series, this next one quickly became one of my favorites that Netflix has released. "Peaky Blinders" depicts the lives of a Romani/Irish gangster family, set in the backdrop of post-war Birmingham, England in 1919. It is loosely based on a real gang that existed during this time. The story centers on the leader of the gang Tommy Shelby, played by infamous Cillian Murphy, and Chester Campbell (Sam Neill), a commissioned detective sent to extinguish the gang. The show has a grittiness and intensity to it that only adds and enhances its charm. While set in a time dominated by men, the show does a great job at integrating really strong female characters. If you are a fan of crime dramas and period pieces, definitely check this out. The acting, writing, and sets are all top of the line. Not to mention it's full of well-dressed, handsome men with Brummie accents.
2. Atypical
"Atypical" is a Netflix original that follows the life of Sam Gardner, a teenager on the autism spectrum, who has just become fascinated with the idea of dating. With the help of his friends, family, and therapist, we are able to watch Sam’s journey in finding a girlfriend. Although this is the main plot of this show, with each episode, you are able to really get to know who Sam is, and how the lives of the people who are most important to him are affected by the challenges associated with his autism. The show as a whole was incredibly thoughtful and funny. Unfortunately, there is only one season of the show as it just came out this past summer. Don’t be too upset though, the second season of Atypical was thankfully renewed by Netflix and will be coming out in 2018! I don't think I have ever been more connected to a show's cast like I was, and still am, to the cast of "Atypical". By the end of this show, you will have discovered a new found love and obsession with penguins... just trust me on that one.
3. Unbreakable Kimmy Shmidt
If you like the humor of "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation," then you will love "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt." Written by Tina Fey, this Netflix original focuses on the life of Kimmy Schmidt who is rescued after 15 years of being in a cult. In order to veer away from the “mole woman” persona that was thrusted upon her by the media, she decides to venture to New York to reclaim her life. With a naive and wide-eyed view of the world, Kimmy finds herself in funniest and strangest of scenarios. From learning the new technology of today to trying to incorporate and learn new slang, Kimmy’s life is nothing short of interesting. With the help of her sassy roommate Titus, crazy landlord Lillian, and rich and narcissistic boss Jacqueline, you can really see how Kimmy is unbreakable! When I first discovered this series, I watched the entire first season in one day and have been hooked since. I’m telling you it is just that good.
4. Stranger Things
If you have not heard of or watched "Stranger Things," then you must have been living under a rock for the past year. "Stranger Things" is a Netflix original that has skyrocketed since its first premiere on Netflix the summer of 2016. The show takes place in a small town in Indiana in 1983 following the mission of Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) to find her 12-year-old missing son Will. With the help of Joyce's older son and Will's three best friends, along their mission, they will experience and unravel a chain of supernatural and unexplainable events of secret governmental experimenting, supernatural beings, and one strange little girl. If you are a fan of sci-fi or old 80s films, then this is a show for you. The acting, writing, humor and suspense of this show will have you one the edge of your seat begging you to watch more. If those aspects don't peak your interest, then how about that this show has an amazing soundtrack, filled with 80s fashion and, of course, some extremely relatable characters. The second season is coming out on October 27th 2017 (better get started now)!
Hopefully, some of these Netflix Originals catch your eye! If they do be sure like share this article and enjoy!
