With the fashion world a whole 6 months (give or take) ahead of us, this year’s fashion “month” started in March with the styles and trends for the autumn and winter. Now, I put “month” in quotations because, throughout the month of March, only New York, London, Milan, and Paris are emphasized. However, fashion shows continue throughout April and even May, with shows in Australia, Tokyo, and one of my favorites: Seoul.
Here are some of the designers from Seoul, South Korea that you just can't ignore.
1. Nohant by Noah Nam
One of my favorite designers, Noah Nam, epitomizes modernism and simplicity to all of his designs. Nohant's fundamental principle is to "create a collection of iconic essentials that both women and men would want to wear every day with a focus on distinctive design, enduring style, and uncompromising quality." Timeless pieces are the centerpiece of this collection, with coats, cashmere sweater, and flannels. His styling and designs are all about looking stylish without trying; think Sunday Brunch and that element of chicness.
Normcore happens to be one of my favorite fashion styles, characterized by the casual appearance while keeping an elegance with elevated pieces. Through this collection, it is the perfect way to dress up the iconic t-shirt and jeans combo is to add a great coat. Now I'm just gonna say, that "a great coat" is probably going to come up a lot more often than it really needs to, but hey, beautiful coats are one of my weaknesses.
2. 87mm by Wonjoong Kim & Jiwoon Park
Wonjoong Kim and Jiwoon Park are a few of the veterans of the modeling industry in Korea. Their faces and walks can be seen on almost all of the well-known brands' runway shows. The two have taken their expertise and great sense of style to produce their own designs. Some designs throughout Seoul Fashion Week can be characterized by being "overly stylish", so Kim and Park have created their staple pieces that can be worn throughout the year.
This collection featured green (hint hint, it's Pantone's Color of the Year, and all over the runways in South Korea). Trench coats, army green, and checkered fabric (not shown). Titled "Mhermher, At Minning Laboratory (my personality)" in homage to Masion Martin Margiela. The styling throughout the show can be characterized as British tailoring, which can be seen in the suits and cropped trousers. Which leads me to items that everyone needs, regardless of gender, a power suit and cropped trousers, because who can say no to beautifully constructed pieces?
3. Cres. E Dim by Hong Beon Kim
Being labeled as one of the "Top 10 Korean Designers in Seoul" is an incredible feat, and you can definitely see the creativity in Hong Beon Kim's designs. Throughout the show, the models held shovels, gardening hoes, and other tools which kind of fit the theme titled "ROBOTS OVERLORD" (or not). However, the tools in no way took the attention away from the impeccable designs. In addition to the colorful background, this was one of the shows with the most colors filled with yellows, pinks, and red. Think athleisure, especially with the styling of sweaters with skirts and the slouchy coziness of the designs.
Although I may be a hypocrite because my closet consists of all black and navy, but who's to say that winter must be filled with dreary colors? Add a fitted bottom to your slouchy top, or forget about all the fashion faux pas and wear baggy clothes like a potato (no shame, I do this). It's not about your curves, it's about the being cozy.
4. Ordinary People by Hyeong Cheol Jang
Now, although this collection was not technically shown during Seoul Fashion Week (it was shown in Florence during Pitti Uomo 91), Hyeong Cheol Jang's beginnings were in South Korea. Although a menswear line, these pieces could be seen as unisex. When first viewing the show, all I could think of was a rich private school kid who smoked cigars and drank whiskey, but still showed up to class the next day (in his bathrobe, duh. Reference the third pictures). These designs are for those who appreciate the smaller details in the designs, those who have high levels of sartorial taste. Long cardigans, puffer jackets, and a beautifully structured coat be still my heart.
Puffer jackets, as elementary, as they may seem, are one of the up and coming jacket styles which incorporates functional wear (aka actually being warm) and trendiness. Also, sleepwear is the new everyday wear; so that adds about 10 (+20) extra minutes to sleep in in the time that you would've needed to pick out an outfit. Thank you fashion world!
South Korea is definitely going through a normcore, athleisure vibe at the moment, especially with these four designers above. They represent some of the finest, innovative, and impeccable designers that Seoul has to offer to the world. It's all about reaching out and connecting, especially to those that are different, those that are diverse. I know winter just ended, and although I hate being cold, I really look forever to incorporating some of these styles into my outfits. Just promise me though that you will buy a new coat, a beautiful, well constructed, and structured coat.
Cheers.
