365 Day Poetry Goal: Week 8
Julian Wynn Smith

It’s been eight weeks since I’ve started this challenge. I must say, I’m quite surprised at how creative I’ve been this whole time. There are so many ways that you can write poetry, whether you add limitations or not, it’s definitely a liberating experience to write out your thoughts, ideas and emotions in a creative way. Even though I have written about similar topics a multitude of time, I feel like I haven’t been as redundant as I expected to be despite knowing this. Obviously, it’s always hit or miss, but at least it’s not all miss!

As usual, for those of you who do not know why I am doing this, I will quote my first article here:

“I have realized that a great way to keep sane when you’re busy (especially with very tedious work) is to keep your creativity flowing. So recently, I have decided to start a sort of creative goal for myself. I’m going to write 365 poems. That is one every day without stopping. This is all free form and off the cuff. So if it’s short, long, good, and/or crap, that is up for you to decide.”

Please enjoy.

Sometimes it is best to be a bit cold and pessimistic. If you're too trusting, you WILL get hurt. However, you can be too cold and never trust anybody. It really is a balance in this world. I have seen the nicest people, and people take advantage until they're destroyed. It doesn't pay to sacrifice too much. It really doesn't.

Too Naïve

Please don’t believe too much in what people say
A simple lie can be the detriment of a connection
Completely turns around what you believe
To see them do the opposite of what they said
What an overthinking mind can conjure
For me, it would have been best to leave that behind
But the lies are always in my head
I should have never asked that day
But my pride wouldn’t let me
I’ve destroyed my self-esteem again
You’re a catalyst of juxtaposition
With words that were supporting pity
But my friends help me when I’m down
When they’re around I feel better
But in the end it’s my decision
To improve myself from rejection now
To see them do the opposite of what they said
It would have been best to leave that behind
I wish I was never curious enough to look
You know the exact thing to say without knowing it
A 180 that punched me right in the heart

Often there are many unrequited feelings in life. The best thing to do is to learn from them and never give up. Can't change the impossible, so you might as well accept it.

The Opposite of What I Could See

I know you don't think about me
But I most certainly do
All of the things we've been through
No matter how small, so true
Maybe you never had any clue

Couldn't get over the consequences
Targeted once I let down my defenses
They say honesty is for the best
But I only got somewhere through jest
It's hard for me to sleep, let alone rest

I'm intelligent in many different ways
But least in what would make you stay
I never noticed your eyes turned away
Even though I could feel my shame
I wanted to believe you felt the same

---

Had to study all night for a test, I've only slept one hour. So guess what? I'm gonna write about being tired!

It's Only Been An Hour

It's only been an hour
Since I've closed my eyes
I think about everything
Yet there's nothing on my mind
Overthinking things gone sour
I'm so fucking sleep deprived
Can I satiate this feeling
With a little more sleep tonight?

You see my eyes, they're so red
Sun glasses can hide them well
Thoughts of lies swim through my head
A fascist who cannot be quelled
Lying and sighing on my bed
The masses are not well
Just prying my mind to death
So crass, just too much hell

But It's only been an hour
Since I've closed my eyes
I can't seem to be asleep
Long enough for me to dream
Just like a crumbling tower
As the hours go dwindling by
As morning bursts through the seems
I've lost those hours of my life

This piece is supposed to have an Edgar Allan Poe feel to it. Very dark, and haunting. What a better time for Edgar Allan Poe than in winter?

A Cold Night's Requiem

Cold and dark as the fog rolls in
Why do these nights remind me of my sins?
Hasn't there been enough suffering?

Now a black cat walks in front of me
Yellow eyes that are piercing and juddering
I understand it's true meaning

Of that time when they planned it all
That man who couldn't take the fall
Always at "their" beck and call

Those eyes remind me of his
The piercing sounds I unwittingly reminisce
My nightmare for "their" bliss

That foggy winter night, when it happened
That nightmare in reality continuously downtrodden
Too soon after the metal lodging

Cold and dark as the fog rolls in
Why do these nights remind me of my sins?
Hasn't there been enough suffering?
I'll never forget those final words he was muttering

---

For this piece I really went too far with the gerund. Hahaha
But it's an experiment, so bear with me. It's quite dark. It's kind of based off of a business man who knows he's jipping people, and can't believe they're falling for it. He does it for a living, but doesn't like it.

Much Too Trusting

I'm always suffering
From words that I'm muttering
And others are suffering
From those words I'm muttering
Even if they meant nothing
To some they mean something
You are much too trusting
To a man who is bluffing
The doors I keep shutting
From the lives I keep dumping
The trash that is pumping
And utterly corrupting
The coats that I'm puffing
For my ostentatious huffing
You really are much too trusting
To a man who is bluffing
Very much correcting
The perfect setting
Actions so unwitting
You'd think I was jesting
All I am is collecting
The money that you're spending
For then I am betting
To lose it on everything
The mouth that's not shutting
The ears that are rusting
The words all mean nothing
Why do you see something?
I'm always suffering
From words that I'm muttering
And others are suffering
From those words I'm muttering
You really are much too trusting
To a man who is bluffing

I really should be happier for my life, that I am healthy, that I have a loving mother, amazing friends, and an easy life. What do I have to complain about? Every problem that I have is caused by me, and no one else. Why should I skirt the blame to someone else? I don't think I'm anywhere close to enlightenment, but writing out a basic idea of it can be a bit enlightening in its own way. I will do the best I can in my life, and I hope I can give back to the people who deserve it.

Beginning Enlightenment

I should be happy that I’m on this earth
That I can breathe
And I have self-worth
Without anyone who agrees

I should be happy to be alive
That I have a mother who cares
Friends who would strive
To see me succeed anywhere

I don’t need material possessions
I don’t need acceptance
I don’t need to be lascivious
I don’t even need reminiscence

Because the past is the past
I should live everyday like it’s my last
Life can feel like it’s going too fast
If I don’t stop to look through the glass

I should feel as young as I want
Age is just number that represents health
I don’t need to be nonchalant
If I want to express myself

Whatever anyone tells me
I’ll just accept it with kindness
To everyone who’s brand new
We all have the same likeness

I am happy I’m on this earth
I am happy to be alive
And my mother who gave me worth
Deserves to survive
She deserves to survive

I tried writing a kids poem about going to the zoo this time. I kind of failed at making it a kids poem (I admit, I've never really read any). So you will definitely see me try this one again in the future! In any case, I did a lot of research doing this. You may learn some neat stuff at least!

I Went To The Zoo

I went to the zoo today
With all seven continents of animals, no way!
Asia, Australian, Europe, Africa,
South America, North America, and Antarctica,

But this isn’t geography, this is zoology!
Many of these animals have literary anthologies
Why don’t we stop by flamingo lake?
Give them red algae to turn their coats pink.

You may see an elephant, but their eyesight is poor
However, they have the biggest brains in the animal world!
Their trunks carry over 40,000 muscles,
Handling a cramp for them must be a real struggle!

Indigenous to Australia is the Red Kangaroo
Hippity, Hoppity, hop, that is how they move
As a Marsupial, they have a pouch for their kids
To protect them from eagles, who can be relentless

Speaking of that, the Eagle is the symbol of the USA
Their eyesight is so good they can you up to two miles away!
Just know that the eagle has absolutely no fear
And be very careful if you ever face its leer

How about the 3,000 species of snakes?
Please stay away from the pretty small ones for your sake
Snakes can be so unbelievably glutinous
That they’ll explode after eating something too humongous!

Speaking of fat, the hippopotamus at night can eat eighty pounds of grass
There really would be a mess if they ate a little too fast…
They sleep underwater, with their nose and eyes on the top of their heads
Their bodies automatically come to the surface every five minutes for a breath

Penguins are found in only the southern hemisphere
They each have their own unique calls so they don’t lose their dears
They’re highly social birds and travel in packs
They used to be as big us in the pre-historic past!

The Zebra can only be found in Africa
Like most equestrians, they sleep standing up
Their stripes on their bodies helps keep them cool
Like a fingerprint, their stripes are unique to each individual

This is only the beginning of my visit to the zoo
It would take more than one visit, there’s so much to see and do!
So much more than a poem could ever explain
My interest is piqued, I want to see the zoo again!

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

108819

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
