32 SDSU Courses You Never Knew Existed

Even if this is your second semester at State, or you are on your fifth year, I am sure the following list will surprise you. If you’re like me and don’t get much exposure to what other courses other majors take, then you will also be pleasantly surprised at the multitude of courses in various disciplines San Diego State offers. If you get the chance, take one of these courses and expand your mind.

AE 530 Rocket & Space Propulsion

What’s more fun than studying about space and rockets? It shouldn’t be -- dare I say -- rocket science.

AFRAS 476 History of Hip-Hop

This course is for you hip hop aficionados hoping to learn everything from Run DMC to Usher.

AMIND 370 Tribal Gaming

If you have ever wanted to learn how to bet at gambling casinos located on Indian reservations, this might be of interest to you. Consider PSFA 381 (see below) if you need help.

CLASS 340 Gods, Gladiators & Amazons

No, not Amazon.com, but mythological heroes and civilizations revered in the past. A course on Amazon Prime’s success may be available in the future.

CLT 595 Zombies

What? Zombies? Where?! This class will not only feed your brain, but may actually have you feeding on brains after.

CS 550 Artificial Intelligence

Did we not learn anything from Terminator? The machines are taking over!

DANCE 421 Ballet

I am sure all you Black Swan fans would enjoy this course. Not me, though.

ENGL 501 Literature for Children

Relive your kindergarten days with books from your childhood. Bring out your inner child once again!

ENS 138 Self Defense for Women

Ladies, take this course if you wish to be the next Jane Chan or Bruce Lee. I’ve heard this class will kick your butt, so be prepared!

ENS 146 Surfing

GEOG 321 United States

We all know America is the best. So quit being a commie and take this class!

HIST 406 History of Sexuality

Now here’s a history subject that is sure to keep your attention.

HIST 486 World War II

America: Back-to-Back World War champions. Just like any other history class, except without all the boring parts. So basically, Dubya-Dubya Two.

LATAM 580 Naked War Films

It’s all in the title.

HTM 435 Sporting Event & Festival Management

Learn how EDC or Tomorrowland events are planned in HTM435. Heck, you may even help plan one of these events in the future!

LING 253 Invented Languages: Klingon & Esperanto

While these languages are certainly of no utilitarian purpose, spice up your resume by adding that you speak Klingon at your next job interview. Iwlij jachjaj!

MUSIC 170 Mariachi Ensemble

If you have always felt Mexican at heart and wanted to learn mariachi, quizás deberías tomar este curso

MUSIC 351 Psychedelic Rock of the 1960s

This one is sure to leave you with all of the knowledge there is to know about this musical era!

MUSIC 351 Great Music: Hip-Hop

Once again, State shows off its repertoire of hip hop courses for the enlightened musical geniuses.

NAVS 401 Naval Weapons

PH 353 Human Sexuality & Disease

Warning: after this course you may become abstinent for life.

PHYS 552 Modern Optics & Lasers

You get to play with giantlaser beams (Austin Powers reference for you millennials).

PSFA 381 Gambling Addictions

Ah, gambling addictions. Sad, sad gambling addictions. Learn how not to get hooked on a game which relies solely on luck and absolutely no skill.

RELS 370 Goddess Studies

They say -- or at least I do -- “every woman is a goddess,” so why not study them?

RTM 304 Leisure Tourism

Learn how to chill and relax, or chillax, in this leisurely-paced class.

SLHS 101 American Sign Language

If you have given spoken languages a try with no success, try your hand at learning ASL.

SOC 210 Culture & History of Surfing

Dude, you got the best barrels ever, dude. You just pull in, get spit right out of 'em and then you just drop in and smack the lip and whapam! You just get so pitted, sopitted!

SPAN 504 Don Quixote

For you Spanish enthusiasts, this semester-long course focuses solely on Miguel de Cervantes’ 1605 novel, “El ingenioso hidalgo don Quixote de la Mancha,” arguably the most influential work in Spanish literature.

TFM 571 Women Who Call the Shots

No, this is not a Total Frat Move course with stories about women ordering shots at a danky PB bar. Instead, it exposes the underlying themes of feminist directors in modern cinema. Not so interesting, now, huh?

THEA 120 Acting

If you are looking to be the next Bradley Cooper or Hillary Clinton, then this course might be of interest to you.

WMNST 352 Women's Sexuality & Body

Two things men are interested in. Strangely enough, in a women’s studies department.

There you have it folks! I hope I have enlightened your little noggins and, possibly, even introduced you to classes you never knew existed! Here’s to a great spring 2015 semester! Salud!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
