Like many college students will within the next three weeks, 600 Michigan students left Ann Arbor last Saturday and embarked to Puerto Vallerta, Mexico. Before leaving, I was really nervous I wouldn't be able to handle everything the week was bound to throw at me, but now that I'm home, I am so happy I went.
If you chose not to go to PV, you missed a great time. That being said, however, I agree with the people who say it is the best week you never want to do again. Spending the last day of break at home is exactly what I needed and it has allowed me to realize how many things I have here that I overlooked before spending the week in Mexico.
1. Not having your previously only bikini-clad body exposed at all times.
2. Soft toilet paper.
3. Being able to say with confidence the local you are talking to is not in the cartel.
4. A good night’s sleep.
5. American dollars.
6. No humidity.
7. Music that isn’t an EDM remix of a Top 40 pop song.
8. Not waking up to an EDM remix of a Top 40 pop song.
9. Good water pressure.
10. Sitting down for extended periods of time.
11. Being able to connect to wifi in more places than that one lounge chair by the pool.
12. Alone time.
13. Being in temperatures other than super hot at the beach or absurdly cold in the air-conditioned hotel room.
14. Heinz ketchup.
15. Not having to pay $600 to sit at a table.
16. Talking to people whose first language is English.
17. Drinking tap water.
18. Ubers: because you know the drivers won’t take advantage of the fact that you don’t speak Spanish and charge you more than they should.
19. Having a bed all to yourself.
20. Not being woken up in the middle of the night by your drunk roommate coming back from the club.
21. Eating knowing you don’t run the risk of getting food poisoning from eating something as plain as grilled chicken or fettuccine alfredo.
22. Starbucks.
23. Legitimate federal laws.
24. It being cool enough at night to sleep under the covers.
25. Non-alcoholic beverages.
26. Watching your sunburn turn to tan.
27. Nursing your calloused heels back to health after a week of not wearing shoes.
28. Feeling your body has a purpose other than being a container for alcohol.
29. Having things to do at night that are not going to a club or staying in and watching Mexican soccer highlights.
30. Knowing with certainty the person you are talking to will not only remember the conversation, but will also remember meeting you.
