30 Signs You're a Dancer

30 Signs You're a Dancer
  1. You constantly get the question “Oh, so what kind of dance do you do?”
  2. You constantly have to explain what styles like “modern” or “hip hop” are. (“Well, no, it’s really not what you think. No, it’s not interpretive dance. Please stop.”)
  3. Every song you hear is a potential new routine that you immediately have to involuntarily make choreography to in your head, resulting in weird twitches and footwork in public places like the bus or grocery store line.
  4. You find yourself standing in first position, AKA like a duck, a lot of the time.
  5. Every single joint in your body cracks: ankles, knees, hips, neck, shoulders, and somewhere you really didn’t know existed until it started making a popping noise …
  6. People expect you to be graceful all the time but in reality, dancers can be some of the clumsiest people.
  7. Trying a new style for the first time can be extremely awkward. Not all dance is the same, so trying to make a ballerina do hip-hop is a disaster just waiting to happen.
  8. No, we do not twerk all the time.
  9. But yes, some of us can twerk very well, thank you.
  10. Flexibility is a gift and a curse.
  11. We’ve all had our fair share of injuries: pulled muscles, accidentally being hit in the face, broken bones, twisted ankles, bruises like none other, blisters …
  12. You feel no pain in your feet because of calluses.
  13. You stretch when you’re bored. You stretch when you do homework. You stretch in class. You actually enjoy sitting in middle splits sometimes. It’s comfortable, we swear.
  14. Leg cramps are the absolute worst thing ever. EVER. Death is inevitable with every charley horse.
  15. “Sorry, I can’t, I have dance tonight.”
  16. We’ve all had that one ridiculously strict coach that makes you lose all confidence in your dancing abilities.
  17. Stereotypes about Russian or Eastern-European coaches are so accurate.
  18. You get constant requests to demonstrate crazy leaps someone saw on So You Think You Can Dance that one time.
  19. Bending over to pick something up means your leg is up in a 180 and you have perfect balance.
  20. Not all dance is with partners. But when it is, it’s freaking awesome.
  21. Athletic? Yes. Sporty? Not exactly. We gave up on sports in elementary school. Sorry soccer, you just weren't cutting it for us.
  22. But dance IS a sport, thank you very much. Not to mention, it’s a form of art. Basically, we’ve got it all.
  23. We may look perfect and make everything seem easy, but it really isn’t. Trust us, not just anyone could do what we do, and it takes some serious training.
  24. “Let’s go across the floor.” Oh, please no.
  25. Every team has some weird ritual or warm up they HAVE TO do before every performance.
  26. We’ve mastered the arts of fake eyelashes, competition make up, and perfect buns. Also, our ears can withstand even the heaviest of fake diamond earrings.
  27. You like to think you can speak French based off the minimal ballet terms you know. (“Ahh yes, fouette arabesque chassé. Merci.”)
  28. Meet a fellow dancer? Instant friends.
  29. Your old dance photos from 1st grade are #tbt gold.
  30. Even on the worst, most stressful days, nothing makes it better like a good, hard dance practice.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
