30 Signs Of A Catholic School Survivor

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Catholic school is not for the weak. The term "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" applies to no situation better than the land of the plaid and the home of service hours. That is not to say you do not have some fond memories, but you know that no one can truly understand Catholic school unless they attended one. Here are a few signs you are a survivor of Catholic school.

1. You know it is the truth that plaid is rad.

2. Things like socks that don't cover your ankles and brightly colored shoes that don't conform to the uniform are basically forms of blasphemy.

3. Even gym socks had to cover your ankles, and if your regulation gym shorts went below your knees, bad things would happen.

4. Dress uniform day was the worst day of the week.

5. Your public school friends thought you spent your whole day in prayer, prepping for the convent.

6. Despite their "Sound of Music" stereotype, you know that nuns are actually pretty badass.

7. Trying to bring some individuality to your uniform was a pointless effort.

8. If you went to a single-sex school, your skills in communicating with the opposite sex are unfortunately a bit lacking now.

9. However, what you lack in flirting ability, you can make up for with your ability to recite any prayer at any time. It was as big a part of your education as learning your times tables.

10. You swear the school made school mixers just so that teachers could yell at you to leave room for Jesus. They enjoyed it far too much.

11. For Catholic school kids, the Pope is sort of like Beyonce.

12. It also was always really cool when the pastor of the parish came to visit your class. It was like getting a visit from the President.

13. There was always major competition to see who could get the most community service hours. It also was a big part of your grades. Like you could not graduate without it.

14. People also were really competitive about grades.

15. There also was a lot of competition for who got to be Mary at the school Christmas pageant. There always was a lengthy audition process for your homeroom teacher.

16. However, everyone knew the daughter of the Room Parent would get to be Mary, and chances are, she probably was the most non-Mary-like person in the class.

17. You learned every trick in the book to stay awake during school rosaries.

18. School masses were fun though, because you got to sing out to God. If he gave you a good voice, thank him with it. If he gave you a bad voice, send it right back to him.

19. It was always fun to have days where you had to dress up for mass. There always was a bit of competition to see who had the best outfit.

20. The ultimate outfit competition came though when First Communion season rolled around. You were so focused on having the best ensemble, you almost forgot about the far more important Communion part.

21. Catholic school kids really can be quite competitive.

22. The only thing everyone always did want to avoid though was going to Confession. Your school probably made you go once a semester, and it was always the most terrifying experience.

23. You did not want to tell your priest, who you saw every weekend at mass, all about how you blamed your little brother for everything you did wrong.

24. You knew they were not supposed to, but you could just tell they sometimes were judging your confession of talking back to your mom.

25. One of the good things about Catholic school is that you hardly swear now. Even the most minor curse words were not allowed at your school.

26. You also now have a profound sense of guilt whenever you do something slightly wrong.

27. Catholic school really instills lasting qualities and values in a person.

28. Things may have been rough sometimes, but you are a survivor.

29. It really was not that bad.

30. Okay, fine. Truly, the fondest memories you have are the fact that you got off school on religious holidays. However, you never will deny your Catholic school roots because it has made you the person you are today.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
