3 Ways To Stave Off The Stress This Semester

Don't let this semester get the better of you.

3 Ways To Stave Off The Stress This Semester
A Drop in the Ocean

I don't know about you, but this has been an overwhelming semester. And it's barely even half through! Between lab reports, friend drama, PHYSICS 2, and more lab reports, I'm only just getting by. Surely I'm not the only one, so I want to share some things I do to get into a better state of mind.

1. Sleep

This should be obvious, but it's not. Sometimes I forget that I am a human being who requires sleep to survive and function. I was signed up for the IEEE Xtreme 24-Hour programming competition this weekend, which I ended up missing... But imagine if I had stayed up for 24 hours straight! I'd be even more dead than I am now. Humans need sleep, so use your weekends to catch up. You'll regret not doing so on Monday.

2. Friends

And I don't mean the TV show: you gotta get out of your room and socialize. Even though friend-drama can be a pain, friends are so important. Upperclassmen friends (in your major) are amazing because they can help you with what classes you're going through right now, and they're proof that you can make it out of this semester alive! And friends that are in your grade and classes can be equally awesome because y'all can struggle together, the best way to make friends. And even if your friends aren't in your major, they still can be a wonderful source of support.

3. Procrastination

Perhaps you were wondering why I'm writing the first article I've written since May. And I'll tell you why! Because I'm procrastinating studying for my physics test. Hey! I never said this article had good advice! 😉 But seriously, sometimes you just need to chill out and focus on something else for a little while. Read a book. Take a walk. Revel in the fact that the weather seems to finally be cooling off (at least where I live)!

Don't forget: you have limits and that's okay. Taking on everything and pretending like you can handle it all will only hurt you. If you need to say no to an invite, that's perfectly fine. Sometimes we have to take a breather.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
