While our favorite show "Friends" had so many important lessons in it, we often overlook some of the smaller yet very important lessons that it taught us. Not every problem that the six characters faced was earth shattering, but we still learned something about how (not) to handle a situation, depending on who was acting how. In particular, there are three super important lessons that I feel like "Friends" made a point to teach us, and these lessons are ones that I feel like humanity will be much better if we exercise daily.
1. When a parent clearly delegates who they would like to leave their child to in case of their sudden death, don't argue with them and make them feel bad about their decision.
This lesson comes from the Amy collection of episodes, where Rachel's spoiled, pretentious sister first meets baby Emma not long after she is born. Ross and Rachel had obviously put a lot of thought into who would raise Emma if something happened to them--if you are unaware, Monica and Chandler would get Emma, followed by Ross and Monica's parents. Both couples would have been an awesome placement for Emma, as she would have had contact with her half-brother, Ben. When Amy finds out that she would not be in line to raise Emma (and by extension, Chandler would not be raising Emma if Monica had died), the entire meal is ruined by the sisters' constant bickering. A mature adult would have accepted that in placing Emma with Monica and Chandler, it would have been as little change for Emma as possible. Instead, Amy allowed her bruised ego to ruin dinner and make Ross and Rachel feel guilty for trying to do what is best for their daughter. Nobody should be making a parent feel bad for their parenting choices if the parenting choices are very clearly thought out. Especially when Amy couldn't even get Emma's name right--she kept calling her Emily or Emmett.
2. When you ask friends to help you move heavy furniture, don't make the friends hold the heavy furniture for several minutes while you figure out what you and your significant other want in your relationship.
This instance comes from the episode where Phoebe and Mike break up for the first time. Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Rachel are helping Phoebe and Mike move this super heavy couch into their new apartment. When the four friends bring in the furniture, they politely ask where Phoebe and Mike want the couch--and they are met with the couple realizing they want different things. Phoebe and Mike ignore the gang's pleas to just answer them so they can put the heavy furniture down because they just HAD to have that conversation that minute. In retrospect, they could have had the gang put the couch down where they were so they could sort out their differences without the other four sprouting a hernia. I really love the Phoebe and Mike storyline, but I found it absolutely disrespectful to the four who were helping them that Phoebe and Mike were totally disregarding them because they just had to have that conversation at that minute. Think about the people who are helping you when you move, especially when they're the ones doing the heavy lifting.
3. If you have plans to be at a gathering, don't be over an hour late without calling because you're too caught up in your own life struggles to be there.
When Phoebe has her birthday dinner in season eight, she and Joey are the only ones who are actually on time. Monica and Chandler want to have sex quick because she's ovulating, but they end up getting into a fight over Chandler's recurring smoking habit. Ross and Rachel are on their way when Rachel has a hard time leaving Emma, forcing Ross to push her out of the apartment. He locks them both out, causing at least 20 minutes of havoc for the both of them. When Ross' mother lets them back in, it's another 10 minutes of convincing Rachel to leave her daughter before they finally show up at the restaurant. Meanwhile, Phoebe and Joey are forced to move from a table of six to a table of two because the other four friends are SO late. When Monica arrives, she makes a comment about how the table is too small before she realizes why that comment was partially her own fault. That night was supposed to be in celebration of Phoebe's birthday, but instead, the gang made it about themselves--Ross and Rachel made Ross' mom bring Emma to the restaurant, and Monica and Chandler were still fighting at the restaurant. It was almost gratifying when Phoebe ditched everyone to go be with Mike--she got to be with someone who is dedicated to her, the other four got to go home and continue on with their lives, and Joey got six dinners. Joey was the winner of the evening. Don't let your personal problems get in the way of your ability to be a good friend.
