28 Signs You Grew Up as a Church Kid

A glance in the lives of church kids everywhere.

28 Signs You Grew Up as a Church Kid

I am a church kid.

Whew, glad that's off my chest. I grew up going to Monday prayer meetings, Wednesday Bible studies, Friday youth groups, Saturday youth events and Sunday Services. I made ministry mattresses, slept at church lock ins, attended VBS and even played a few games of tag in the church parking lot at 12 in the morning. Since I am a seasoned church kid I thought I would make a list that classifies being a church kid. If even one of these apply to you probably are a CK welcome to the family.

1. You knew not to plan things for Saturday nights because you had to get up for church in the morning.

2. You have been scolded by someone who wasn't related to you for talking during service because, "it takes a village to raise a child."

3. At some point in time you have played church with your friends and no one could decide who the "Pastor" should be.

But you know that it was always you. Besides, you're the holy one right?

4. Not being able to have a boyfriend or girlfriend in high school.

You never really got an answer on this one.

And you better not get them clothes dirty or they might not make it to the next Easter

6. Having to explain to your school friends what a revival was and why you couldn't do anything extra this week.

7. THE CHURCH SOCKS!

Look at them all frilly and itchy and demonic!

8. You knew words like "sacrilegious" and "blasphemy" before you knew what "photosynthesis" was.

9. You loved when there was TV in the children's church room 'cause that meant you were going to watch VeggieTales.

Or some other amazing show because, let's admit it, Christian kids had the best TV shows.

10. You always dreamed of swimming in the baptismal pit.

11. You were spanked in church or at a church event in front of everyone and the shame was very real.

12. Bible bucks, Christian Cash or whatever currency your children's church had was amazing and when you got to cash it in you felt like a boss.

"I make it Rain!"

13. You tried to skip church once

Only once. Never again. You learned your lesson.

14. You couldn't go to sleepovers because you would miss church on Sunday.

15. You have waited for your mom after church at least 30 minutes before church ends.

If you are lucky she leaves right after–that would be a miracle!

16. High school English literature was made easier because you got all the Bible references.

17. You had to explain to your school friends what a fast was and that your family wasn't going through a financial crisis.

18. You constantly heard the verse "train up a child the way he should go" as a reason why you couldn't miss church on Sunday.

19. Also hearing verse "Spare the rod, spoil the child" as the reason why you were being spanked.

In all honesty, I wouldn't mind being spoiled.

20. Hearing "Honor thy father and mother then you will lived a long full life" as a warning that your life was about to be cut short.

21. Having worship session in your room and dancing to your favorite Christian artist everyday.

22. You were the only kid in school who knew Santa wasn't real and wasn't ashamed to tell everyone.

23. You went to a "Heaven or Hell," "Hallelujah," or "Harvest Party" instead of going trick or treating on Halloween.

24. You tried to rationalize why you shouldn't have to wear a t-shirt over your bathing suit at the summer youth pool party but knew you would lose the battle.

25. You were close to starvation every Sunday because you were at church so long.

26. You now feel out of place if you are not at church on Sunday morning.

27. Somehow you were always taking the best naps after church.

28. You always know that at you're at church you would always find love compassion and tons of great people there to support you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
