25 Realities About Living In A Sorority House

With almost a semester under my belt, I’ve realized that living in a sorority house is nothing like I imagined. The movies have got it all wrong. I can’t remember a time, besides the night before Big-Little reveal, that I saw a group of my sisters crafting together. I see more people in sweatpants than boat shoes and sometimes I swear we’d be better off living in a fraternity house. It’s a great time though. You get to live with all 60 of your best friends. Okay, maybe they’re not all your best friends, but you’ve gotten to know and love these sixty sisters in one way or another. There are far more crazy nights and memories than anticipated, and the reality of living in honestly beats all the movies and T.V. shows. If you’ve lived in or are planning on living in at some point here are twenty-five realities of sorority house life.

1.   On event nights like semi-formal, don’t expect to take hot shower after 5pm.

2. The TV is always on. Generally playing SVU, Gossip Girl, or Grey’s Anatomy.

3. You eat more bagels than you thought humanly possible.

4. Blood will be shed during room picks.

5. The house always seems eerily quiet Sunday afternoon. Everyone’s finally getting their lives together.

6. The internet is so slow. Especially during midterms and finals.

7. You share clothes on a daily basis.

8. You never get any work done at the house. None. Ever.

9. Everyone always makes fun of each other.

10. If you have a car, be prepared to be bugged all the time. Trips to Walmart, Starbucks, and fraternity houses are all on the agenda.

11. Thursday night = Chaos.

12. The washers or dryers or printer never works. Especially when you really need to use it.

13. You get distracted so easily.

14. You develop your own lingo. Leaving the house and going elsewhere you soon realize not everyone gets what MO’ing means.

15. Grilled cheese or chicken fingers is a call for celebration

16. It’s either too hot or too cold. The temperature is never okay.

17. SOS

18. Getting people to do their chores (ie. take out the garbage, clean the kitchen) is nearly impossible.

19. The lost and found is ALWAYS overflowing.

20. The kitchen looks like a tornado after game-day.

21. Weekends are sad because you don’t get fed.

22. Boy policy :(

23.  The bathroom is always covered in hair. In the showers, in the sink….everywhere.

24. You always have a buddy to walk to class with.

25. You wake up most mornings hungover but thankful for the greatest girls and best year of your life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
