23 Signs You Grew Up In Church

If you, like me, grew up going to church (especially the same church), then you know that some things are almost as true as your love for Jesus. Whatever denomination you are, these 21 are probably some of them.

1. VBS was the highlight of your summer

As a kid, nothing was more fun than Vacation Bible School. You probably hopped between all of them in the area, hitting up as many as you could.

2. You always wanted to eat all of the Communion bread

Let's be real, whether you use crackers or bread, the stuff you used for Communion always seemed to taste better than normal bread/crackers.

3. You went to youth conferences fairly regularly

Many a good weekend was spent at a youth conference or on a youth trip. Unless you were literally the only kid at your church, you probably couldn't avoid them (which is good).

4. The number of Bibles you own is a little ridiculous

You probably had a baby Bible. Then, when you got a little older, you graduated to a kids' Bible. And who could forget your preteen/middle school Bible that was just full of little inserts with advice? Now, you've most likely got a "grown up Bible" to round off your steadily growing collection.

5. Children's Church was mostly about snack time for you

Children's Church snacks > regular snacks

6. You have your own words for church things

Baptism = dunking

7. You have your "church friends"

They're definitely some of your best pals, but you also have a set of "school friends."

8. Most of the people at your church remember you as a baby

Your fellow church members remember your entire life. While this can sometimes be a good thing, having that many people remember your embarrassing 7th-grade phase isn't exactly ideal.

9. You always cringe just a little when you hear people say "oh my God!"

You've been taught not to say it so intensely since you were a kid that just hearing it gives you a weird feeling

10. You capitalize the word "God"

Because why wouldn't you?

11. You were shocked to find out that the "kid version" of some stories weren't the whole story

So David actually cut Goliath's head off after he hit him with the stone and Rahab was more than just a nice lady who helped some spies to save her family. These were among many of the shocking things you discovered when you read the stories in your "grown-up Bible."

12. You have probably dressed in costume for a living nativity scene

Many times. In multiple roles.

13. You know most of the adults you know from church

All of your "adult friends" are from your church.

14. Without knowing it, you memorized everyone's "assigned" seat and parking space

Even though it isn't official, everyone has a specific seat and a specific place that they park every Sunday. Anytime it gets mixed up, even a little bit, people freak out.

15. You know a lot of Contemporary Christian songs

As a kid, Stephen Curtis Chapman and Casting Crowns were your jams. Most of the concerts you've been to are Christian concerts — and they were fabulous.

16. You know how to handle someone who bothers you

The only real way to do it is to back away and sing Jaron and the Long Road to Love's "I'll Pray For You."

17. All anyone told you when you went to college was "find a good church"

While this is good advice, you probably hoped to hear some other stuff too. No such luck.

18. The "Back Row Baptist" Twitter account is one of your favorites

Seriously, guys, if you've managed to read this far in this article, then you're going to love this guy's tweets!

19. You get really hype when there's going to be a lunch after church

Everyone knows that church potluck is bomb. Each person has their specialty and you get really excited to get to eat those every time you get the chance.

20. You feel really weird when you don't go to church

Days get all mixed up and there's this little nagging guilt, which means that you'll definitely go the next week.

21. You're really good at giving the "Sunday School answers" to questions

You've been trained for years on knowing when to chime in with answers like "Jesus" or "The Bible."

22. You're an unpaid VBS volunteer

Remember all the way back at number 1 and we decided how much we loved VBS as kids? Yeah. That's sort of how it is in real life too. Way back when, VBS was fantastic. Now that you're volunteering, you're kind of wondering how exactly you're going to survive the kids each night.

23. You know why they call it a "church family"

Because no one is there for you like they are. They know your life and you know theirs. While you (probably) don't share blood with any of them, they are your adopted family and you wouldn't have it any other way.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
