21 Things I Learned At 21
Erin C. Spare

I can't believe I am about to turn 21. 21 as in old enough to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages. Old enough to purchase cigarettes in the state of New York (I'm not a smoker but I recently found out about that law and was intrigued for some reason). Old enough to not to make as many stupid mistakes as I do. Old enough to know better.

Below are 21 things I have learned in the past 21 years I've been alive. I've made mistakes along the way but I have also learned a lot from them and hopefully you can pick up a thing or two from my experiences:

1. Those pictures you took back in middle school that you thought were "cute" actually weren't and they will haunt you for the rest of your life.

2. Not everything on the internet you read is true... and you can't charge your phone with an apple...

3. You can't live off of take out food. It's expensive and it will make you go up a pant size (or four... #tbt to the days when I was a lot slimmer). Learning to cook will change your life.

4. Tearing others down isn't what puts you ahead. When you surround yourself with people that want what's best for you and help you to realize your potential everyone benefits.

5. Opposites really do attract.

6. It's important to fight for the things you believe in even if the people around you hold different beliefs.

7. You don't have to physically look up to the person you look up to.

8. You have to learn how to balance work with play. While this becomes increasingly harder the older we get it is extremely important.

9. Beyoncé is really as amazing in real life as everyone says she is (and if you ever have the opportunity to go to one of her concerts, GO!!!!)

10. Do something meaningful with your spare time. Recently I took on the position of being the philanthropy chairman for my sorority and my life has been consumed with an immense amount of volunteer work. Not only has it given my life a little more purpose but I have been able to really help others.

11. Having a little brother isn't so bad especially when you can take him to Sephora and have him help you choose the right shade of foundation.

12. Distance really does make the heart grow fonder... but it doesn't destroy healthy relationships (even if the other person lives across the country in Alaska :') )

13. Sleep is a powerful weapon. You can accomplish so much more when you take care of yourself and take the time necessary to refuel your body.

14. Laugh often; even if you're laughing at how badly things are currently going in your life because one day you won't be able to.

15. You'll appreciate your parents (and their cooking) so much more when you move out.

16. You don't have to be scared of your boss to respect him/her.

17. BECOME FRIENDS WITH THE PEOPLE IN YOUR CLASSES!!!! It will be beneficial both in and out of the classroom.

18. Don't just step out of your comfort zone, jump out of it (even if that means walking into a random dorm room full of strangers on the first day of college and introducing yourself).

19. Things change and friends leave, life doesn't stop for anyone.

20. Coffee is a very addictive substance.

21. It is extremely important to drink water before you go to bed on a Friday/Saturday night.

Cheers to 21 years!!!!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
