October 1st, 2018. The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired a 2019 7th round pick from Dallas in exchange for defense men Connor Carrick. If Carrick plays more then 50 games this coming season, the Leafs will acquire a 6th round pick instead of the 7th round pick. There is no doubt that Connor needed to have an amazing preseason, coming off of 2017-18 playing only 47 games, collecting only 4 goals and 8 assists. Unfortunately, the outcome was not what Leafs fans had hoped for. After spending the year alternating places with Roman Polak, The two will soon be reunited as Polak signed with the Stars this July during free agency.
Around 10:30 this morning, It was reported that Connor Carrick was placed on waivers. At about 12:10pm, Chris Johnston reported that he wasn't actually placed on waivers, raising trade speculations extremely high. The 24 year old defense men signed a one year contract this summer as a RFA. A right handed defense men with a cap hit of 1.3 million for the next year is not the worst thing for the Stars, and that 1.3 million dollars just cleared up some cap space for the Leafs to sign Nylander, Marner, Matthews and Tavares.
In the end it comes down to whether Carrick plays more then 50 games, and who the Leafs draft in the 6th or 7th round. For the Stars, they took a shot on a underestimated coffee loving dog dad, who I hope succeeds where ever he may be. Once a Leaf, always a Leaf.
