Modern New Year is centralized around celebrating the coming new year with special parties, festive foods and even a big ball dropping in in New York's Times Square. The new year, however, does not just encourage partying till midnight and fun food, for it can be the root of change in which people which to see in themselves for the forthcoming new year.

Rooting back to the Babylonian customs, New Year resolutions began as promises to divine power in exchange for favors and a fresh start to new year. Clearly, this is not the contemporary practice when it comes to New Year resolutions as 4,000 years have passed since the civilization was in existence. This is why instead of promises to Gods and Goddesses, we make promises to ourselves.

The promises that people make for themselves can range anywhere from starting to work out, have a better diet, or even learn a language. Traditionally following the pattern of trying to better oneself or one's life, the ancient custom has evolved into personal challenges for a person to to action upon. This is why I have come up with a short of two simple and ideal resolutions that will make your 2017, healthier, happier and more bearable:

1. Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a common practice that is centered around taking in the present moment. Accompanied with a habitual meditative practice, being mindful is something that someone can utilize in everyday life. But without practice one will not be able to get by with inconsistent meditation sessions just "when you need it". This way, through practice and consistency, 2017 may be a year full of more self-control, improved concentration, and a higher emotional intelligence. Here is a great guide to get started with mindfulness.

2. Yoga

The second option follows the practice of yoga. Yoga dates back about 5,000 years with roots in Northern India. The practice of yoga clearly is not new, but definitely has had many Western and modern perspectives put upon the original custom. In exchange for a regular and healthy practice of yoga, one may expect increased flexibility, better circulation, and better protection from injury. If yoga sounds like an interesting practice to start, here are some beginner poses

As they both are great for fulfilling both spiritual and physical needs, a consistent practice with yoga and mindfulness, 2017 could possibly be one of your best years yet.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
