Rap is a the genre of music I hold closely, not just because I love the flow and pace, but also the social aspect of it. I've met some of the coolest people I know through our mutual interest in music. We have been blessed these past couple of years by all sorts of new albums and mixtapes that pack some serious heat. I'll be focusing on five artists who are relatively new, in hopes that you will check out more of their stuff.
1. Bryson Tiller.
Bryson Tiller caught my attention in 2014 with his hit Single “Don’t." He co-signed with Drake and I could recognize the Drake influence. I would describe his music as Trap R&B. His vocals are solid and are showcased in almost all of his songs. His Debut Album, "TRAPSOUL" is a low-key massive hit. As a debut album that recently went platinum, it's hard to argue against Bryson being an up and coming star.
2. Lil Uzi Vert.
Lil Uzi is the definition of trap music. The Atlantic Record artist recently released a mixtape called "Lil Uzi vs The World," and let me tell you that it is the catchiest mixtape this year. When you see that Metro Boomin produced some songs, you know you're in for a treat. It took me a while to acquire a taste for trap rap, but this is definitely an artist to watch.
3. Post Malone.
As a contemporary R&B artist, Post Malone may be the hottest rising star on this list. With his hit single “White Iverson," Malone made a name for himself in 2015. He quickly released a self-titled album of five songs shortly after, in June. I think releasing a small sample of his work from his debut album is a great strategy, mostly for simplicity. Post Malone kicked off 2016 with his latest single “Go Flex,” and it is a prime example of the kind of year he is going to have -- huge.
4. Kodak Black.
It takes a couple of songs to draw me into an artist but with Kodak it only took one. woh a feature. I have nothing but high hopes and expectations from this kid as long as he stays true to himself.
5. Tory Lanez.
Way back in the summer of 2012 I heard a song of his called “Remembrance Day.” Tory incorporated everything I find attractive in a song; it has a slow paced underwater type beat with lyrics I can relate to. I don't think Tory received the recognition he should have back then, but his time has come in 2016. With new singles released this year, Tory is gearing up for great year and I cant wait to see what else he brings.
Rap is never going to slow down as long there are artists who strive to provide listeners with the best they can offer. These artists are perfect examples of this era of Hip-Hop. I suggest you look into every one of them.
