20 Things I Wish I Would Have Known My Freshman Year

I thought I would never get the hang of this college thing.

Freshman year. Man oh man was this one of the worst and best years of my life. I think they should have a guide to help you survive it because that would have definitely come in handy at times. Mistakes will obviously be made, many times, and that is okay. If it makes you feel any better, no one knows what in the world they are supposed to do with all that freedom at 18 years old. It is the best thing because you get a rush and you get to really do whatever you want, whenever you want. It is also the worst because too much freedom will get you in a little bit of trouble.

1. Skip the library sometimes and get those college experiences.

2. Maybe not skip the library as much as I did. (Oops)

3. Join some on campus clubs.

4. Do not be lazy with your study habits.

5. Try to make it to at least one football game of the season.

6. SLEEP as much as you can.

7. Go to the gym & don't let the freshman 15 get you.

8. Do not let a boy control your life, focus on your friends.

9. Go to those frat parties, but do not be that girl crying in the street holding her shoes.

10. Do not procrastinate, get those fitness passports done.

11. All-nighters are never the answer.

12. But bring a blanket and slippers to the library if you decide to pull one.

13. Makeup and cute outfits are not for class, you're supposed to look like you just rolled out of bed.

14. Get to know your dorm neighbors, one of them might turn out to be the love of your life!

15. Unplug from the world for a little, turn that phone off for a couple hours.

16. Remember your religious and moral values.

17. Do your laundry at least once a week, PLEASE.

18. Stop caring about what other people think.

19. Start caring about what makes you happy.

20. HAVE FUN!

I wish I could go back to my freshman year and use the things I know now. Don't take life so seriously, have fun.

You live and you learn.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
