I understand that horror movies aren't for everybody, but I know I'm definitely lost without my constant nights of watching horror movies. Those who can handle the gore and blood from these films have probably seen most of the horror movies made in the world, but there are some people I know who have never seen some of my favorites! So here are a few horror movies that I've watched and thought were so amazing everyone should see as well!
1. Scream
Every. Single. One. Every "Scream" movie, from the first to the fourth with Emma Roberts and her weird fetish with being famous, is an absolute must-see film. It's all about the classic person in a costume who decides to go on a killing spree. It's one of the first movies I've watched as a kid, and it was what really got me into these horror/thriller type of movies. The main summary of the first "Scream" movie is about a girl named Sidney who finds out there is a killer on the loose who is murdering all of her friends and is trying to make her go crazy. It's the typical teen-scream movie that ends in a house party bloodbath, but it's definitely one of the best 90's horror films I've ever watched.
2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
This movie is the classic psycho-type of silent killer flick. This is the movie that started the fear of any chainsaws or work equipment for me. The fact that the killer-star in this movie is wearing the skin of his past victims just tells you there's going to be a lot of death, a lot of blood and a lot of fear all packed into this horror film. Basically, the summary for this movie is that a family is holding one of their family members, who is deformed in a way, somewhere in their house. They bring in people from the street who are looking for help or something of the sort, and then, they free their crazy family member to go on a killing spree and chase down the poor innocent people until he can finally wear them on his face like all the others. This has a few good remakes, but nothing compares to the original.
3. Nightmare on Elm Street
Now, I wouldn't say all of the movies in this series is good enough for this list — but the first one certainly is. The plot for this film is about a nightmarish creature haunting people in their dreams and killing them in the dreams, which — in turn — kills them for real. It's extremely unique. This idea has had anyone who watched this movie in fear of going to sleep and the dreams they might have. The movie makes you question if your dream is real. What's real and what isn't? In this film, it's very hard to tell.
4. Halloween
A classic. This is definitely a must-see. Whether it's the original movie or the remake from Rob Zombie, this movie is still one of my favorites. It's horrifying how this movie sends you into the mind of an insane man behind a mask who decides to kill a bunch of people. It is especially unnerving when Michael Myers is the monster that refuses to die whether it's in the original film, the remake, or any of the many sequels.
5. The Hills Have Eyes
If you're into the idea of inbred people being absolute genuine cannibals towards strangers they meet in the middle of nowhere, then this is truly the movie for you. A family goes on a little road trip vacation in the middle of the desert and gets lost within the mountainous landscape. They decide to just stay there as some members go out to find help so they can fix their vehicle and go home, but there are creatures waiting for them in the night. Though very realistic, and therefore even more scary, this movie makes you question the next time you decide to go on a road trip.
6. Saw
This is definitely one of my favorite movie series of all time. I've watched them all and loved them all. A lot of people say these "Saw" films have no plot and they're only about torture and blood, but these people obviously haven't paid much attention to the movies and the plots focusing around each character depicted in the films. From "Saw 1" to "Saw 6," the plots are mind-blowing. And the torture devices and techniques are extremely creative and interesting.
7. Dawn of the Dead
I remember watching this as a kid and becoming one of the many people who later became obsessed with the idea of a zombie apocalypse coming to be true. This movie is a remake of the original "Dawn of the Dead" but, in my opinion, it is much better. It's bloodier, scarier, and more dramatic than the first. As our characters try to find safety within a seemingly empty mall, our zombie antagonists slowly but surely make their way to their murderous ways. The makeup for the blood and gore shown on the zombie actors is extremely believable, and the story in the film really reels you in making you want to keep watching for years and years to come.
8. Carrie
This is an absolute classic horror movie. It's based around a poor girl in high school who is bullied and basically terrorized by every single one of her classmates for being weird and quiet. We soon find out that the main character has powers beyond anything any of her peers could have imagined. These powers come to their full potential when Carrie realizes she doesn't need to deal with the people who keep embarrassing her and trying to ruin her entire life. She has a way to fight back.
9. A Serbian Film
BEWARE! This movie is not like the others on this list. It is banned in several countries due to the gore and repulsiveness shown within the film. There are rumors about some scenes being real, and therefore, people actually died and such, but who knows. This movie is not your average horror movie — it's actually hell. I love it though, but it's definitely NOT for everyone. I warn you, if you plan on watching this... don't do it alone.
10. Annabelle
The fear of dolls coming to life is in everyone's nightmares, I'm sure. This movie, however, brings you to the focus of a possessed doll. With a demonic force following wherever this doll ends up, our main character is in for a big haunting as she adopts it into her home. The evil that hides behind the hideously creepy features of this doll is beyond anyone's imagination as the possession gradually becomes more frightening and more intense. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is really into the paranormal horror more than the serial killer type of horror seen in movies like "Halloween" or "Scream."
11. The Evil Dead
This remake of the classic "Evil Dead" movie is definitely better than the first if you ask me. It has a lot more blood than the first one did and especially in the end scene, I recommend a bucket close by in case you feel a little nauseous because of the amount of raining blood. In this horror film, we're introduced to a brother and sister reuniting in order to give the sister a nice escape from her drug addiction. But this idea of having to overcome her drug habit soon seems to be the least of this group's worries as they wonder upon a dirty, cursed book that brings upon a demon that tortures and mocks before it finally decides to murder.
13. 28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later
Another very well-made zombie film brings you into the lands of Great Britain and London as the zombie apocalypse is fought in the first film. In this film, however, instead of the zombified people running at quite a slow pace — at least slow enough to escape from — these zombies run like Olympic champions, so your likelihood of survival lowers to almost none. My best advice for those who enjoy this movie like I do is that if it ever becomes real and zombies like this do attack, be sure you run faster than them, and be sure you know how to keep quiet.
14. Orphan
This movie is absolutely original. The idea itself is about an orphan being adopted by a seemingly nice family with some issues strewn within, but then the family begins to have suspicions about if this child they welcomed into their life is really a psychopathic killer. After a few questionable events, it becomes clear that this new daughter is anything but a sweet, innocent orphan. When I first watched this film, I immediately told my boyfriend that he had to watch it because it was like nothing I've ever seen before, and I still believe this holds true. The tension in this movie between the mother and orphan is undeniably enticing to the viewers.
15. The Descent
Right in the first scene of this film, the characters bring you into a very emotional state as we see our main character find out that her husband and little daughter have died in a fatal car crash. In order to help her get over this loss and feel alive again, her friends set up an exciting adventure going exploring through caves but, unknown to most of the characters, these caves haven't been explored by humans before and they hold a horrifying surprise inside. I truly recommend this movie to anyone who loves dark movies with a lot of dramatic twists. Both the first film and the second are truly worth it.
16. Wrong Turn
The first one, not any of the others. The first "Wrong Turn" movie is exhilarating and brings the audience into how the characters experience being chased down and basically hunted by inbred beings. The fear from being chased in the woods and having to avoid clever traps set by these creatures who want to consume your flesh really puts you on edge as you watch the movie. I really recommend this movie because the cast set for this is perfect and the acting is incredibly realistic. It's one of the better movies about deformed beings wanting to cannibalize everyone around them.
17. The Conjuring
Though this is one of the newer horror movies to come into play, it's one of the best. This movie brings about the paranormal through a way in which not many people successfully create. A large family moves into a creepy, old house in which there's a woman who haunts its residents into either committing suicide or killing their children as well as themselves. The realistic actions within this film and the dramatic, yet enticing, way it envelopes you into the story really makes for this to be one of the best ghoulish films to come out in a long time.
18. World War Z
For another film about zombies, this one isn't too bad. There is, of course, the running and screaming that ensues after a terrifying zombie attack, and then there's a new idea that comes up in the film. As the main character is trying to fight off these monsters and keep humanity alive, he finds out a secret to walking among the zombies without being targeted. This discovery allows for the characters to stumble upon the Earth without being killed in order to find a cure for this mess.
19. Alien VS Predator
This movie combines two different films, "Alien" and "Predator." In this versus movie, the two monsters are combined into a more horrific film with characters filled with terror and the will to live. All throughout the film, you feel the terrorizing feeling of being watched and hunted by two inhuman creatures. Then, there's the idea of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" which plays a HUGE role in the plot of this film and the inevitable finale.
20. Let the Right One In
This movie isn't just about the gore and horror, it also makes its audience feel sorrow or pity and sympathize with the villain-vampire girl in the movie. This movie specifically has a pull on the heart strings for the viewers because you feel for both the main character boy who becomes infatuated with the evil girl and the evil girl who also becomes slightly in love with the boy. It's a confusing child love story with a mix of blood and horror in order to spice it up and not make it too romantic.
I hope bringing up some of these titles have made you want to re-watch them all because I sure do. I'm really excited for any upcoming horror movies that will debut in the future, and I'm sure I'll be one of the first people to buy tickets to see these movies. For me, the gorier the movie, the better.
