A lot of high school and college age people have been in the restaurant business. This is not always true for everyone, but it is for me and a lot of my good friends. And although we all work at different restaurants, and different settings (an example being I work at a nursing home, while one of my best friends is a server at a local Italian restaurant), a lot of us experience the same types of things.
1. When the customer asks you to get them something for the fourth time.
As if running to the back to get you a desert you didn't order the first time wasn't enough, I'm back for the third time with a drink to go, your leftovers boxed, and you are still asking me to get a box for your desert.
2. When a customer wants a menu item without the menu item.
"Yeah, can I get the spinach salad, but instead of spinach, can I get it with lettuce?"
3. When you ask if they're ready, they say they are, and then you still stand waiting for the order.
"Are you all set?'
"Yes"
*proceeds to sit and decide for five more minutes*
4. When closing time is in 5 minutes, and somebody walks in.
"Oh am I too late? It says you're open until 9, it's 8:55"
5. When you're cleaning up around customers and they just continue to talk and ignore the fact that you just want to leave.
It's always frustrating when you're ready to leave and you have to wait because customers can't move their conversation elsewhere.
6. When customers do finally leave, and they say "if we don't leave, we are gonna have to help with dishes!"
Wouldn't it be so great if customers did help with dishes?
7. When a customer completely stops their conversation to stare at you when you show up at the table.
You know you can keep talking, right? I'm not listening, I swear.
8. When you give one person at the table their food, and the person next to them decides they want that instead.
Yes, by all means, let me waste some food so you have something that looks better.
9. When a customer says "You're so nice!"
I love when customers say I'm so nice. It makes me feel like I'm not just faking nice when I really am on the verge of a rampage.
10. When a customer calls you "sweetheart" or "honey".
"Excuse me, honey, can I get this to go?" Nothing will set me off quicker than being talked down to like that.
11. When a customer asks about your personal life.
"Do you have a boyfriend?"
Questions can seem like something that would be very sweet of a customer to ask, but it really is awkward telling a random stranger about your personal life.
12. When an order gets messed up or sent back and the cook says anyone can have it.
It's amazing getting just a taste of some amazing food, especially for free.
13. When a customer leaves a horrible tip.
I personally don't get tips, but as someone who does serve, I always tip as best as possible because I know serving can be stressful. Servers work their ass' off to give you good service, and they 100% deserve the best tips possible. Don't withhold from them for no reason.
14. When customers are intensely impatient.
A lot of people don't like to understand that they are not the only people you have to serve. It's really frustrating when you have 4 different customers that think that they are all you are worried about. It's enough to make you scream.
15. When you get customers that are genuinely cool and fun to be around.
When you get a customer or customers who are understanding that you're busy and will laugh and joke with you, it's a blessing.
16. Fun with coworkers in the kitchen.
The joking and laughing and shit talk that happens in the kitchen with your coworkers is something you will never get anywhere else. Some of my favorite things about my job are the crazy and stupid jokes I make with my coworkers.
Being a server, whether it's a restaurant, a medical facility, or a fast food joint, isn't all bad. It's not always the best, but sometimes it really is fun, especially when you get customers who are just crazy fun to be around and all of the fun with your coworkers in the kitchen.
