When I came to school, one thing I didn’t think about ahead of time was how my roommate and I were going to arrange our beds. Once we began getting our room set up, we ultimately decided that bunking our beds would provide the most floor space and allow us to freely move about the room with ease. As a pretty easy-going person, I didn’t mind having the top bunk, as my roommate preferred the bottom. And now as a seasoned bunker, I can say that the ‘Top Bunk’ lifestyle presents an interesting set of experiences that everyone should take into consideration before deciding to tackle the top.
1.) Making your bed is a workout
Between having to strip the bed, standing up on your tiptoes to tuck in your sheets and balancing yourself perfectly like a perched owl on the frame as to not wrinkle the freshly placed blankets, your blood will get pumping.
2.) Dropping something means living without it
Sometimes in the middle of the night my phone slips off the edge of the bed, ultimately ending my conversations for the night. (And trust me, you won’t want to get out of bed to retrieve it.)
3.) Living with that annoying space between the wall and your mattress
Because your mattress will never quite touch the wall, it means things will slip between the cracks. My blankets, socks, and even my water bottles have fallen on top of my very (thank God) understanding roommate.
4.) Your bed always creaks
The amount of times I have tried to crawl out of my bed and have woken my roommate up from a nap is unreal.
5.) You have the perfect creeper line of vision…
You have the perfect aerial view of people walking below your window
6.) …Which means you can shout at them and they’ll be very confused
No one can see you on the top bunk!
7.) Trying to charge things is nearly impossible
Your iPhone charger just barely reaches over the bed frame (next year I’m investing in a four foot long cable.)
8.) Getting up to pee is a challenge
Because do you really want to climb back up again?
9.) Forget the ladder, you jump out of bed instead
You soon learn how to land on your feet every time
10.) Your friends forget about you
You scare them when you interject in a conversation, because “I didn’t know you were up there!”
11.) Everyone sits on the bottom bunk, so you get pretty lonely…
When you just want some lovin!
12.) But everyone sits on the bottom bunk, so you get everything to yourself
When you really don’t want any lovin.
13.) When you’re all set to do homework in bed, but forget the one thing you need…
When you try your best but don’t succeed.
14.) Asking your roommate “Can you pleeeease do me a favor…”
Before reading off a long list of things you need them to grab off your desk.
15.) Finally, climbing into bed after a long night out should be its own Olympic sport
If you know what I mean.
