15 Overlooked Items Freshmen Forget To Bring To College

College dorm move-in dates are just around the corner!

If you are anything like me, you are probably going around crazy trying to get everything on the college packing list your university sent out.

Between myself and my friends, these are, in our opinions, the top 15 overlooked, random items you do not want to forget. Learn from our mistakes and prepare ahead!

1. Basic Tools/Toolset

I was given one as a graduation gift and I did not realize how convenient it was until everyone on my floor was asking to borrow my screwdriver and hammer. Maybe not a necessity, but some basic tools were a nice little bonus to have in the room.

2. Steamer

It is a lifesaver, it is better and smaller than having to bring like iron or something ad works better than a wrinkle spray.

3. Toothbrush Holder

It is nice to have your toothbrush and toothpaste visibly out and not stuck in your shower/bathroom caddy or even in a toothbrush carrier, makes you feel a little more at home and not like you are traveling or something.

4. Ice Cube Tray

If you fill it before you go to bed, you will have ice-cold water ready for you in the morning!

5. Brita Water Filter

Nice to have access to water in your room instead of having to go downstairs every time you want to get some water. Much cheaper and better for the environment than having cases of water bottles in your room.

6. Ottoman

A storage ottoman is such a great addition, especially if you raise your bed (which I highly recommend - more storage!!!!). It can serve as a step stool for your bed, another place for storage (let's face it, you will be desperate to find more subtle ways to store extra stuff), and can offer extra seating for you or guests.

7. Tupperware

You are paying too much for that dining hall food. Steal some. Period.

8. Storage Drawers (For Under Your Bed)

There is not enough room in your dorm for all the storage you'll want to bring. A good place to make room is under your bed, you have so much room under there but not enough drawers, bring your own.

9. Clip-On Fan

Ditch the big, stationary fan and get yourself a relatively cheap, desk clip-on fan from target or something. They are just as strong and they are easy to manipulate, I was able to sit mine perfectly to where I could point it either at my bed or at my desk and I could not recommend it more.

10. Dry-Erase Desk Calendar

Some people will use a paper one, some will use one on their computer, but having a nice visual in hanging in your room will sure come in handy, and you only have to update it once a month.

11. Vaccum

You will have crumbs or hairs all over your floor and/or rug constantly and having a vacuum is so much quicker and easier than a dustpan and broom.

12. Air Mattress

Not a necessity, but a nice addition if you have a sibling or friend coming to visit or just know someone who needs a place to stay for the night, having an air mattress available.

13. Rain Jacket

You will be walking all over campus and rain is inevitable so invest in a nice rain jacket.

14. Nail Polish

I recommend bringing your favorite two colors (definitely no more than five), it is nice to have if you have an event coming up quickly and want a little color on your nails but you do not want to pay to get them done professionally.

15. Vitamins (Specifically Vitamin-C Gummies)

Your immune system will weaken, you are in a new environment, and you are living with hundreds of strangers. You are bound to feel sick at some point, Vitamin C gummies are worth stocking up on before you start feeling cruddy.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
