15 Things That I Learned Outside Of The Classroom
Somar Powell

As I beginto wrap up my senior year of college, I've been reflecting a lot. I've learned so much about people, people's intentions, and life. I know it probably isn't what my mom wants to hear, but I've definitely learned a lot more outside of the classroom than I ever did inside the classroom.

15 Things I learned Outside of the Classroom

  • Who my real friends are. Real friends are people that will always care about you. They want nothing but the best for you, and hope you do nothing but succeed in life.
  • How to be myself. A fact everyone has to face, not everyone is going to like you for who you are. I’ve learned to be myself anyway. Your real friends will accept you for who you are.
  • How to drink. I learned what I can and can’t handle. I’ve made some great memories and friends along the way and not to mention have found some great cures for hangovers.
  • How to live on my own. It was scary at first. But, it’s been one of the greatest experience of my life.
  • It's important to find a best friend.
  • People do not always want the best for you. Sometimes people are in fact put in your life, just so you can overcome them and be a stronger person from it.
  • Distance does make the heart grow founder. It sucks being away from family, but there isn’t anything more exciting than going home to people that love and miss you.
  • When to say no. I struggled with this one a bit. I’ve always been a person who likes to please everyone. But, knowing when to say no is so important.
  • How to follow my dreams. I’ve always had an idea about what I want with life. But, now I’m finally carrying them out and I have never been more excited.
  • Sometimes putting yourself first is important. It’s not a bad thing wanting to make sure others are happy, but sometimes you need to make sure your happy too.
  • How to fit in naps. I can’t stress how important nap time is. If I don’t get in my nap I’m cranky. So I guess time management goes with this too!
  • How to let people go. One of the hardest things in life is letting people that you don’t need, but want go. I’m also still learning this. If they don’t better you and you don’t better them, you’re better off without them.
  • How to save money. Buying generic brand is important. It taste the same most of the time and it’s a lot cheaper.
  • How to have fun. I’ve made the greatest memories with the greatest people in college. Things that I will never forget.
  • Prioritizing. It’s important to put first things first. Knowing how to do so has saved a lot of financial problems, heartbreaks, and homework problems along the way.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
