Indie movies have the accessibility that many mainstream movies lack. The characters feel like they could be you or your best friends. The plots deal with real issues in a raw way such as mental illness, heartbreak, sex, being poor, and more. Indie movies are honest about the way the world works, they don't sugarcoat the truth, and the result is bittersweet but beautiful. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the shows which are all on Netflix.
1. "Adult World"
We can all relate to being broke, young adults. Well, Amy (Emma Roberts) is exactly that, but she also is an aspiring poet, stalking a writer, with maybe a crush on the most-perfect guy (played by the cutest guy, Evan Peters) who she works with...wait for it...at a sex shop. You'll have to watch to see how that all plays out.
2. "Safelight"
Can't get enough of Evan Peters? I don't blame you. Despite his physical disability, Charles is set on protecting whimsical, mysterious Vickie (Juno Temple) from her psychotic pimp. A road trip, some lighthouses, and a camera provide an adventure worth watching.
3. "Stuck In Love"
You will laugh and you will cry. By the end of the movie, you'll be making all your friends watch it and quoting lines such as "looking at her hurt." The movie follows three different story lines that intertwine, all with themes of love and loss.
4. "Comet"
There is no love story comparable to what is portrayed here. Over 6 years, the movie follows a relationship that relies on fate and fantasy. The plot and back-and-forth story line is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat (or bed).
5. "Copenhagen"
Need a vacation? Well, this movie offers just enough escape into another beautiful country. A lost man with questions runs into a young girl with answers, the tension is palpable and the mystery is thrilling.
6. "White Bird In A Blizzard"
Let's just say: if you like a good plot twist, this is the movie for you!
7. "About Alex"
This movie explores the strange phenomenon that is being in your 20s. It also touches on mental illness in a very real way. This reunion weekend brings together a group of old friends that is not without drama, but still full of love.
8. "The Road Within"
Possibly the best road trip movie ever made. A man with Tourette's syndrome takes his OCD roommate and an anorexic woman on a journey that will touch your heart and teach you a lesson (or five).
9. "Short Term 12"
Ready for a super emotional one? This film follows a couple who have enough problems of their own but are also supervisors at a group home for at-risk teens. It is a look into a world you might not understand otherwise.
10. "I Believe in Unicorns"
Where are my lovers of aesthetics and cinematography? This film is full of phenomenal, gif-worthy shots. However, the plot deals with tough subject matter as the honeymoon phase for a new couple quickly becomes scary.
11. "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World"
Do you ever find yourself thinking, who would I spend my last days on earth with if I knew it was going to end? We all do it, and now there's this fantastic, dramatic, romantic comedy to explore that very question. (The cast is perfect, including the dog)
12. "Liberal Arts"
Follow a young New Yorker who just can't seem to let go of his college days; one trip back changes his otherwise dull life. This movie navigates you through the strange process that is "growing up" and making tough decisions.
13. "Good Will Hunting"
I had to add a classic in this list. Robin Williams and Matt Damon teamed up to create one of the most inspiring movies of the '90s and one that shouldn't be forgotten.
14. "Keith"
A classic good girl meets bad boy and reevaluates her entire life story. Bonus points because Jesse McCartney is in it *heart eyes*. This quirky movie is packed with great songs and addictive dialogue that will have you adding it your favorites list after one watch, but have tissues (sorry).
15. "6 Years"
Sometimes life takes people who thought they would be together forever down different paths. This movie showcases a roller coaster of a relationship that goes from dazzling to dangerous.
