During the holiday season, there is always so much to do. How can one person possibly be able to do everything in just a few short weeks? Moreover, how is someone supposed to choose what to do when so much is offered? Well, here is a simple list of 15 things everyone should do to get into the holiday spirit:
1. Bake cookies
Stock up on delicious recipes, grab your friends and family, and make an afternoon out of it. It's a fun and unique bonding experience for all involved. Plus, the day will end with many batches of yummy treats that will last the rest of the month.
2. Drive around town at night, and look at Christmas lights
It goes without saying that some people go all out with their Christmas decorations, so why not view the masterpieces that took so much time and effort to create. What could be more fun than seeing beautiful, twinkling lights shining on a dark night? This would also make for a perfect date.
3. Holiday movie marathon
This is the perfect time of ear to take out those old, traditional movies like How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer. And, let's not forget the newer holiday films that are bound to become classics like Elf and Home Alone. My personal favorites are Frosty the Snowman and The Muppet Christmas Carol.
4. Kiss under the mistletoe
A kiss on the cheek from an over-affectionate grandmother does count!
5. Make a snowman
Of course, this activity typically requires snow, but there are other ways to create Frosty. Snowmen made with sand are starting to become a new tradition. Simple drawings of snowmen are also great, especially since they last longer and don't take as much sweat to complete. Get creative with it!
6. Go sledding
Again, snow is usually a requirement, but a little out-of-the-box thinking will allow anybody to participate. I speak from experience when I say that simply sledding down a grassy hill is just as fun as when it's covered with snow.
7. Go window shopping
Take a few friends to your nearest stores or malls and just walk around. The best places to go are Toys 'R Us and Target, because you can let out your inner child.
8. Caroling
Whether you are going door-to-door in your neighborhood or just singing at a retirement home, you will be spreading joy wherever your voice takes you.
9. Plan your New Year's Resolutions
What better time is there to plan the upcoming year? What would you change in your life? Just remember that a resolution should only be on your list in it would make you better and/or happier.
10. Go through old clothes
Donate anything you don't like anymore or haven't worn in a while. It'll be a gift for people that aren't as fortunate.
11. Decorate a tree
This is a given. Decorating a tree is the perfect annual bonding experience for families. Everyone gets nostalgic when hanging up old ornaments.
12. Make a holiday music playlist
Then, listen to it whenever you can. Just make sure you have enough songs that you won't become quickly annoyed at the repetition.
13. Make paper snowflakes
It's a beautiful and simple way to decorate a room. Plus, it let's out your inner, artsy child.
14. Sip on hot drinks
Coffee, tea, hot cocoa, apple cider. Anything works as long as it makes your tummy feel warm and fuzzy with love.
Side note: the best way to enjoy hot drinks is by cuddling near a fireplace with a good book and an adored pet.
15. TAKE PICTURES
This is by far the most important step to making your holiday season fun and memorable. Whenever something special happens (even if it's just a friend getting cookie frosting on their nose), take a second to snap a picture. If the moment makes you smile now, the captured memory will make you smile in the future.
