15 Non-Academic Things I Learned In My Freshman Year

Everyone knows college is about getting an education. While this is definitely the most important aspect of college, so many of the lessons I learned my freshman year took place outside of the classroom. I gained so many valuable skills which I would not have been able to learn anywhere else.

1. How to get ready in 10 minutes.

College students are always in a hurry. Whether it's rushing from class to class, running to make that meeting on time, or simply needing the extra 30 minutes of sleep, we rarely have extra time to spend on hair and make up.

2. How to become a pro at taking food out of the dining hall.

As my friends and I like to say, "it's not stealing; it's taking it to-go"

3. How to do everything as quietly as possible.

Most college students have roommates and live in very close quarters. Because of this, learning to be quiet out of respect for your roommate is essential.

4. How to function while running on four or less hours of sleep.

College students have a long list of priorities; however, sleep is usually low on the list. Between studying, work, clubs and having a social life, you don't spend much time sleeping.

5. How to take a nap anytime, anywhere.

Since most college students get very little sleep every night, we treasure naps. In college, it's very common to see someone sleeping in the library at 3 p.m.

6. There will always be people who do better than you.

In classes, sports, and every aspect of your college life. Learn from these people and focus on doing the best you can—that's all you can do.

8. High school does not matter anymore.

Academic achievement, athletic achievement, popularity status: none of it matters in college.

9. You will most likely have a lot of people you talk to on a daily basis.

But you'll probably only have a few friends who you can call at 3 a.m. to come over and eat hot cheetos with you after a bad day. Keep these friends around for life.

10. How to get creative with cheap food.

Most college kids don't have extra money to spend on expensive food. So, we learn to get creative with what we can afford. Did you know there are over 100 different ways to prepare ramen?

11. How to make five dollars last a month.

College is expensive: tuition, rent, textbooks and student fees all cost a lot of money. Not to mention most college students work low paying jobs at low hours. Because of this, college students have to be very careful with their money.

12. When having a bad day, go to sleep.

Sleep is a miracle cure for so many problems.

13. There's a student discount for places you would never imagine.

Spottify and Amazon Prime are two of the many. Many restaurants around college campuses also offer student discounts. Before buying or subscribing to something, always find out if there is a student discount.

14. Caffeine is an essential.

Since most college students get very little sleep every night, caffeine is a college student's best friend. College campuses often have multiple coffee shops around campus, along with vending machines filled with energy drinks.

15. There are days when giving up sounds nice and easy.

Every college student has days where they feel like just giving up. However, giving up and throwing away all your hard work is never worth it. The day you receive your degree will make all the blood, sweat and tears worthwhile.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
