14 Things Only Siblings Understand

Having a constant companion for life creates so many struggles.

Siblings: you love to hate them. Older or younger, having a sibling undoubtedly changes your life. Whether it’s for better or for worse, is up to you to decide. Here are 14 struggles of having a sibling that most of us have experienced at some point in our lives.

1. When you’re arguing with your sibling and your parents start defending you.

It’s the one time you’re not annoyed by your parents’ eavesdropping. Once you have the support of the real adults, it’s impossible for your sibling to even try to argue against you.

2. Fighting with them for the front seat of the car.

The rules of shotgun mean nothing to your sibling. Whoever sits in the front first gets all of the glory—winner takes all.

3. Finding any excuse to insult your sibling.

The funniest part of your day is finding a particularly ugly picture on the internet and telling your sibling they resemble it quite nicely.

4. The solidarity you feel with your sibling when someone tells you that you look alike.

The only time you agree with them is when you’re vehemently denying your resemblance to anybody who will listen to you.

5. Having to share food with them.

You live in the same household, and yet your sibling can’t get their own snacks? Not to mention that they’ll probably take way more than they should be allowed to grab.

6. When you’re play fighting with each other and your parents get mad at you for causing a ruckus.

It’s not your fault that the vase accidentally fell over. Shouldn’t parents be happy that you’re showing affection towards each other, even if said affection is in the form of violence?

7. Tattle-telling on your sibling for anything and everything.

Whether they kept poking you or they were just looking at you weird, nothing brings you more joy than complaining to your parents about the most annoying things your sibling does.

8. “Sharing” clothes means stealing your sibling’s shirt and claiming it as your own.

They don’t even ask you half of the time, anyway. You can’t really get mad at them, though, because your closet is secretly full of stuff that was originally their stuff, too.

9. Getting called your sibling’s name by your parents.

How do your own parents forget your name—they’re the ones who picked it out for you? At least you didn’t get called by the dog’s name (yet).

10. When you have to fight with each other over who gets to take a shower first.

Even if you have been sitting in your room for the past two hours with the intention of getting in there “soon,” the second your sibling closes the bathroom door you’re filled with anger.

11. Leaving the couch for five minutes and having your seat stolen by your sibling.

The spot you were sitting in hasn't even gone cold yet before they swoop in. Their show of disrespect can only lead to another fight, much to the anger of your parents.

12. When they eat the food you were saving for later.

You were waiting all day to eat your leftover pizza, only to open the fridge and realize that your sibling got to it first. It’s the ultimate disgrace, and you’re not sure you can forgive them for this atrocity.

13. When you catch your sibling doing something that they shouldn’t be doing.

Finally, you have all of the power. Your sibling will do anything so that they won’t get in trouble, and since you’re a nice person, you won’t tell. You do have some ammo for blackmail in the future, though.

14. The strange and unrealistic plans you and your sibling make for the future, despite the fact that you terrorize each other daily.

No, you can’t really live in your parents' house together and own a dozen dogs, nor can you join your rooms together and turn the floor into a trampoline, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pretend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
