With Halloween less than a month away, you may find yourself lacking some of the spooky spirit of the season. But never fear, (or maybe fear a little bit), because I've compiled a list of both scary and fun Halloween movies. So grab a bowl of popcorn, some pumpkin hot chocolate, and watch one (or all) of these spectacularly spooky Halloween flicks!
1. 'Hocus Pocus'
Honestly, this film the epitome of Halloween nostalgia and is sure to get you in a witch-y mood. Set in Salem, Massachusetts, 'Hocus Pocus' follows typical teen Max as he's hounded by the three ghastly Sanderson Sisters on Halloween night. The dialogue between sisters Winifred (Bette Midler), Mary (Kathy Najimy), and Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), send you howling with ghoulish glee.
2. 'Nightmare on Elm Street'
The original, obviously, not the remake. While this movie won't have a lot of jump scares like modern horror films, some of the gory scenes can be truly terrifying. Plus, young Johnny Depp is gorgeous in this movie, so what more could you want?
3. 'Beetlejuice'
This movie has everything: hot, dead Alec Baldwin, Michael Keaton being a creep, Winona Ryder being super goth. This film is so delightfully weird, I don't have a problem watching it year round, but it is great for when you want to get into the Halloween spirit.
4. 'It'
With the remake of 'It' gaining a lot of attention as a box office smash, it wouldn't hurt to take a look at the original. Tim Curry portrays the demented clown Pennywise, who lures children to their demise via their local sewer system.
5. 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'
Easily one of my favorite holiday movies, since it works for Halloween and Christmas. However, 'Nightmare' will always remind me of Halloween. The stop-motion animation is gorgeous, the music is delightfully catchy, and Oogie Boogie has one of the best Disney villain songs ever.
6. 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'
If you're looking for something a bit weirder to watch this fall, look no further than 'Rocky Horror'. This cult classic musical is shown in cinemas a lot in the weeks before Halloween, so grab your corset and fishnets and try your hand at the Time Warp.
7. 'The Addams Family/Addams Family Values'
"They're creepy and they're kooky..." and also a great double feature for a rainy autumn day. 'The Addams Family' is one of the most famous spooky pop culture clans around, and chances are if you don't watch one of the movies, you'll see some girl dressed up as Wednesday Addams for Halloween.
8. The "Halloweentown" series
It's truly difficult to try and avoid one of these movies around Halloween. And why would you want to? Disney Channel's entertaining series about a family of witches garners a lot of nostalgia in our generation, as we all secretly wished Debbie Reynolds was our magical grandma.
9. 'Corpse Bride'
Another Tim Burton stop-motion film, 'Corpse Bride' takes a look at life, death, and what's in between. The story follows Victor, a young man in Victorian England who gets dragged to the underworld by Emily, a murdered woman searching for true love.
10. 'The Shining'
Widely regarded as one of the best horror films of all time, 'The Shining' is the perfect classic scary movie to keep you up at night. Hopefully, you won't go too crazy and start writing "REDRUM" on everything.
11. 'Shaun of the Dead'
Who said horror movies can't be funny? 'Shaun of the Dead' perfectly combines the elements of classic zombie movies and fast-paced British humor, as well as a cast of ridiculous and morally compromised characters.
12. 'The Haunted Mansion'
This movie genuinely terrified me as a kid. Filled with ghosts, zombies, and talking stone busts, 'The Haunted Mansion' was intended to be a harmlessly spooky Disney movie, but was actually quite dark, making it enjoyable for you even now.
13. 'Scream'
The horror movie that makes fun of horror movies. While not as blatantly obvious as the 'Scary Movie' franchise, 'Scream' did parody the horror movie genre perfectly, while still maintaining being actually scary instead of just downright cheesy. It's a great scary movie for anyone who is constantly making fun of scary movies.
