1. The Sacrament
This might be one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It’s based a true story of the famous Jonestown cult which makes is even crazier. The cinematography, writing, plot and acting all flowed together so well I really was on the edge of my seat most of the film. As a psychological thriller that really exposes mass manipulation and cruelty all in one course delivered on a platter gilded with religion and hope served with a side of intensity, it was everything for which I could have asked. As much as I am hyping up this movie, it is not for the faint of heart. 5/5
2. The Seasoning House
This movie jumps straight into the action, taking place in rural Russia in a whore house. The twist all of the women in the film are victims of kidnappings during a war, giving it a very cruel and disgusting premise. The main character is a deaf girl who is forced to take care of the others in exchange for “better” treatment, when in fact nobody is better off in this terrible place. While it has its mix of blood and drama, I would say it is so good because of the interesting plot and is definitely worth the watch. Again, please be warned it is graphic. 5/5
3. The Babadook
This movie is just fucked up. I couldn’t watch it alone in one sitting, I had to leave and go find a room with some lights. A movie about a demon possession with a difficult-to-swallow twist. The character who is possessed is a small child, per the usual, but the way he treats his mother is astounding. The acting is just incredible and the writers really knew how to pull at your heartstrings, then tear them apart with scissors. I have watched it a few times over and still, it never fails to get me. 5/5
4. House Hunter
Unfortunately this movie was removed from Netflix recently, but I originally watched it there, and man did I enjoy it. It was rated poorly, but at the time I was just watching every horror film on Netflix, so I stumbled upon it. The plot was well thought out, two families go to visit a house for sale, and they can’t leave. Not in the sense that someone is holding them hostage or the house is locked, they just can’t leave the property. If they run away over the next hill, they show up on the front yard again and in every case, they cannot escape. The pantry is always refilled every morning, there is fresh shaving cream in the bathroom, and there is more than enough firewood. But man it definitely gets crazy, and I would definitely recommend. 5/5
5. The Taking of Deborah Logan
I found this movie particularly creepy in the sense that, if you have ever witnessed first hand a loved one of old age suffer from dementia or alzheimer's, it knows how to twist your head around. It is similar to paranormal activity in the style of the movie; someone is carrying around the camera, it is often dark and night vision is used, and there is a lot of suspense. I don’t often find suspense very scary because it is so predictable nowadays, but this movie had some scenes that got me good, and I really respected that. I am not a huge fan of possession movies (minus The Babadook) but they did a good job with this one. ⅘
6. You’re Next
I liked this movie for the plot and the creativity. There is a family trapped in a house with a bunch of killers, but one of the family members turns out to be a total badass. She gives all of the killers a run for their money with a mix of great fight scenes and wits. There is enough blood to go around, so be warned! The only drawback is that it can be a little predictable at times, and some of the acting is not so great, but still worth the watch. This film recently was removed from Netflix. ⅘
7.Chained
I put this a little lower on the list just because it is a hard watch. The entire movie is grueling scene of one grossly cruel scene after another, but again, that’s why we watch horror movies right? Kidnap, blood, psychological torture and more of the likes pack this movie into a ride worth the ticket. At times I found myself a little frustrated at a few plot holes, but most horror films lack more plot than this. Unfortunately, this has been recently removed from Netflix online, but can still be ordered with their DVD service. ⅘
8. Exam
I really liked this movie because there is a lot of analysis and thinking that takes place during the movie. Putting yourself in the characters’ shoes made it far more fun and yet I was still unable to figure all of the film out for myself. The ending also caught me a little off guard, but enough so that I went back for a second watch. A good one to watch with friends. 4/5
9. The Ward
This movie made this list because of its great twist at the end. If you like movies about psychology and insane asylums this one is definitely for you. I did not really see it coming, which was saying a lot because I can usually detect a bad plot coming from miles away. There is not a ton of gore and the story builds well. 3.5/5
10. 13 sins
This is a great mix of plot and gore. A lot of death and blood, which some people can only watch so much of, but it makes up for it with an interesting plot. My favorite part was the ending which is most of the reason it made the list. Many absurd and ridiculous stuff does happen, but if you can accept the premise of the movie, then it isn’t much to get past. Would say it is worth the watch over anything similar to saw. 3.5/5
11. Shrine
Suspense and terror kept me wanting to find out what happens next in this one. A group of hikers gets lost in the woods in a foreign place and encounter something strange that haunts them. Sounds like a lot of films. So not a ton of originality, but the writers made up for it with a few twists towards the end of the movie, although I was not satisfied with the ending, most I consulted said it was still worth the watch and they still enjoyed it. 3.5/5
12. The Conspiracy
I liked this movie because it was suspenseful in the way that you are rooting for the main characters not to get caught for pretty much the whole film. I just didn’t think there was enough sheer horror in the movie, it doesn’t mean I would call it a suspenseful drama and not watch it. I was happy with the ending, which I think is very hard to pull off given the rest of plot. 3.5/5
13. Would You Rather
I put this on the list because it is basically another version of the saw movies, minus a decent plot, but it is interesting to put yourself in the shoes of the characters and see the decisions you would make. Absolutely recommend to watch with someone who is okay with talking about the scenes during the movie, because it would make the film more interesting to think about. ⅗
