Marathon Monday is arguably one of the most exciting days of the year. While it can be an extremely fun day, there's always a possibility that the festivities can get too out of hand. Whether you're a seasoned pro or are new to Marathon Monday, here are some tips to help keep your day as safe and fun as possible.

1. Always make sure to travel with friends.

Wherever you go on Marathon Monday, you'll encounter a ton of people. Whether it's along the race route or on your way to a party, make sure you travel with friends. I know you probably have "Use the buddy system" cemented into your brain, but it's always good to have a reminder.

2. Don't overdo it.

If you're planning on drinking, make sure you don't overdo it. Pace yourself, and know your limit. You probably don't want to spend your Marathon Monday in a bathroom, or worse, in a hospital.

3. Wear the proper attire.

Keep in mind that you'll probably be outside for most of the day, so make sure to check the weather before wearing your American flag shorts.

4. That being said, don't wear something you don't want to get dirty.

If you're planning on going to a party, it would be advisable to follow the "party clothes" rule: don't wear your brand new Stan Smiths or any kind of clothing you would be devastated about potentially ruining.

5. Bring something to hold your stuff in.

Yes, people do use fanny packs, and they say they're actually really helpful.

6. Actually go and watch the marathon.

You're witnessing a piece of history, so why miss out on it?

7. Don't walk into random houses.

Unless you know someone that's throwing the party, or know it's a frat house, it's probably not a good idea to walk into a random house because you heard music coming from somewhere inside.

8. Don't leave alone or let a friend leave alone.

Like previously stated, it's best to stick to the buddy system.

9. Don't take drinks you didn't pour/watch getting poured.

Once again, this one's a given but still very important.

10. Always be aware of what's going on.

If someone looks like they're not doing too well, or if someone is looking suspicious, make sure to be aware and find help addressing the issue to prevent any potentially dangerous situations.

11. Naps, food and water are your friends.

You have a long day ahead of you, so make sure you're eating enough food, drinking enough water, and maybe sneaking in a nap or two when there's a lull in the action.

12. Make sure to tell everyone that it's Marathon Monday.

While you're enjoying your day, your friends from home will probably be sitting in class. Make sure you remind them of that.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
