12 Things I Didn't Realize I Missed About Home

We did it guys, we survived another semester and we are home for the holidays. Some of us are so, so ready to be off campus, while others of us are dreading having to move back home. No matter where you lie on the spectrum, once you get home, you realize there are things about home you didn't even realize you missed. Here's my list:

1. Sleep... Glorious Sleep.

I don't sleep a lot while I'm at school. I take early morning classes because if I didn't I would never finish any of my work. On top of that, I stay up very, very late. So, when I got home, I not only realized that my days and nights are very messed up, but also that I really needed to catch up on sleep. The first day I was home, I took a four hour nap and still slept for a solid twelve hours that night. I'm not even kidding.

2. Seeing My Friends From Home

Many of my best friends till this day are friends from home. Where I grew up, everyone travels through the school system together so a lot of my friends are people I've known my whole life. We have a lot of loyalty to each other and no matter how long it's been since we've talked, we are able to pick up right where we left off.

3. My Parents

I'm really, really close with my parents. When I'm away from home, I still talk to them everyday, multiple times a day and I get used to not seeing them all the time, but as soon as I'm home, I can't remember how I went so long without being around them.

4. Puppies

I love my dogs and of course I miss them when I'm gone, but like to my parents, I get used to not being around them all the time, but when I come home, all I want to do is snuggle them.

5. Alone Time

On a campus with 50,000 students, it's really hard to get some peace and quiet. There's people in every hallway, on every sidewalk, and seemingly in every seat in the cafe. Even when I'm alone, I'm never alone. Most of the time it doesn't bother me, and then I come home, my parents leave for work, and I get the whole house to myself and it is the sweetest feeling ever.

6. Having a Car

In a city like East Lansing, having a car isn't really necessary. There is no where to park anyways and the bus is probably cheaper than gas. With that being said, I love to drive. At the risk of sounding like a bad country song, I love rolling my windows down, turning my radio up, and driving nowhere. Driving is where I find my inner peace.

7. Going Shopping

You can go shopping in East Lansing, but it means finding a day to kill, people to go with you, getting on the bus, having to lug everything you bought with you, and having to find money to pay for all of that. Let's just say I don't go shopping too often. Which is sad cause I actually really like to go.

8. Eating Out

Similar to going shopping, I don't have huge amounts of time or money to spend on eating in a restaurant, but I also really like to get fancy and go out.

9. Cooking

I really love to cook but in a college dorm room there is not a place for me to go and cook, so I have to make up for it during the holidays.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
